When I worked at the Gap, we were required to wear all Gap clothing during our shift. We got a substantial employee discount to enable us to do that, but we did have to buy our own clothes.
Even the military requires its employees to purchase their own uniforms (and they conveniently keep re-designing them, so you have to buy new ones all the time).
But they do give you one set for free, and that is what your company should do. Give you one shirt, with the option to buy more at cost.
However, even if you are in the right, is this something you want to fight about? The fallout from this could cost you far more than a shirt, it could cost you your job.
