I work in a spa. When I was hired (over a year ago) the policy was that we had to wear basic black. Fast forward to last week. We receive a memo that we are being issued uniforms (black tshirt w/company logo) and we would continue to wear black pants. No probem... until we are told we have to pay for them. Now, I have no problem wearing a uniform but I think if it is company issued the company should pay for it. Agree... disagree?

Now, I will say that I am po'd at them for something else so I am open to the possibility that I am bringing those feelings into this matter.

I agree with you sort of. I believe it's the law (at least, in MD) that if a company requires you to wear something with their logo on it, that they must provide the first one at no cost to the employee, but that they may require employees to pay for any additional ones that they may want to have to use. Essentially, however many they REQUIRE you to get, they pay for. Any extras you ask for, you pay for. I'd check into that.

Absolutely the company should pay if they are forcing you to wear it.

Now uniforms that you must buy for work are tax deductible but many people dont have enough deductions for that to be beneficial.

And I even suggested that... they pay for the first one and we can purchase additional ones. I would have no problem with that.

Oops. I voted Employee should pay, but I meant for the pants, not the shirt. I wouldn't want to buy someone else's advertising.

Our hospital sponsored a uniform event...with all kinds of cute scrubs - Disney, Peanuts, etc. So many that were too cute, tons of us ordered new ones.

The next week (before we even got the uniforms) they announced we had to wear white. Lots of ticked off nurses, let me tell you.

I agree that they should have to pay. How much would it cost the company to buy their employees some T-shirts?? I think they're being kind of cheap, plus it might be illegal like another poster said.

Company should pay. For the first one at least. I worked for a place when I was really young that required us to pay for our own shirts. I did it but hated it. I was young and wouldn't speak up though. And because of how we had to wash the shirts they would get holes in them fast so we would have to buy shirts all the time.

Absolutely. I would have no problem wearing my own clothes in basic black. But once I a limited to clothes with a logo on them, the company should provide at least one set.

The company should pay. We have to wear school shirts (or smocks) everyday. We are given one smock and 3 t-shirts at the beginning of the school year. Needless to say I have about 12 different t-shirts from my school. They pay for them, I just have to take care of them and turn them in if/when I quit. Now, if I want a sweatshirt I have to pay for it because it's not standard issue.

There is no way that I think you should have to pay for a shirt that you will wear only for work.

I accidentally did the same thing. Then I tried to hit the back arrow, but it was too late. I think the company should pay for at least one shirt.

Same here...:lmao: Sorry your poll is messed up now.

I just got a job in the school cafeteria. They issued us 4 shirts and we have to buy the pants.
I have worked for a job in the past that we bought our shirts but we kept them, however our name was on the shirt and not the company logo.

They should have to pay, not you. When I was younger I worked for a salon. Out of the blue, they started selling this clothing line. It was kind of like a pyramid system. They sold the clothes and got a percentage if someone bought them, but if a person wanted to sell the clothes, they really got a big percentage.

They mandated that all the employees had to wear them on Fri, Sat and Sun. to help advertise them. Everyone was really mad about it, but if you wanted your job, you did it. The clothing line was a big bomb-no one bought any of them and they gave it up. I hated them-they were so uncomfortable. I should've spoke up, but didn't.

If a company requires you to wear a uniform of any kind, it should be their bill, not yours. Besides, they probably get a discount on them anyway. DH's company has clothing with their logo on them that people can buy if they want and they definitely get a better deal when they buy in bulk that way.

:lmao: Haha! Lot's of silly people tonight - me too!

Yes I agree that the company should issue you your first set of shirts with their logo on it. Anything beyond that you should have to pay for. That was the policy at my first job, they issued us 3 shirts and 3 pairs of shorts. If we wanted the sweats and windbreaker or hat, we purchased them. So sort of agree. As for the pants, since they do not have company logo on them I don't think they should be responsible for those.

My boss is accepting formal complaints that she will pass along to corporate. I have already filed mine but would love to be able to reference something if it is against the law. Does anyone know where I can find information like that?

Some years ago I worked for a funeral home that required a certain level of attire, because of their demands we were given both a dress allowance as well as free dry cleaning.

On the flip side of that my wife now works for Tiffany & Co., she may only wear Tiffany Jewlery (with the exception of her wedding ring) but there she get a discount and there's is jewlerly available to borrow for the "shift" if needed.

Give 'em hell!

I think you should be grandfathered in..... it wasn't a requirement when you were hired.

I voted "other". In a perfect world your employer should pay for it. However, I think you should suck it up and pay for the polo shirt witout complaint.

Wait, the company is forcing you to pay for the pants or the shirt? The shirt they should pay for but since you already wear black to work, whats the issue with the pants?

Or maybe since I'm tired, I'm missing this completely :teeth:

They want us to pay for the logo shirts only... we can continue to wear our plain black pants/shorts/capris. My poll is regarding the shirts only... hope that clears it up
