Opinions on New Smyrna Beach?

We've got an open day on our trip, but want to be back at DTD by 6 pm for the new Star Wars movie [already have the tix for the 8:30 show on opening day]...DH doesn't want to drive to Tampa/St. Pete's because of all the current construction work=unexpected delay potential. According to AAA, New Smyrna Beach is about 15 minutes further from Orlando than Cocoa Beach (1 hr. 15 vs. 1 hr. 30). It sounds a bit less touristy (which we like) and we were thinking of checking out Winter Garden or Deeland on the way there or back (heard good things about both places). Is this feasible to do? Has anyone else been to New Smyrna Beach?

we were there a few years ago and it was really nice, but I heard there was a lot of hurricane damage. I hope someone knows if there is still damage.
