I am a teacher and tied to our school calendar (which hasn't been released yet for next year) for our visits. Those that I've spoken to that are "in the know" have suggested that Christmas break for our school board will fall late, meaning I will be off the first week of January. I'm assuming if this is the case for my school board it will also be the case for many others. Even still, will the first week of January be quieter than Christmas week? We are yearly visitors so don't need to do and see it all. What is bussing like during these busy periods? I would be arriving January 1st and departing January 8th. Any thought would be very much appreciated!

Marathon weekend is January 4-8 which means over 25,000 runners and many road closures.

Yes, in the past we have went the first week in January, but this coming year will be very busy due to the runners.

Lots of schools off that week around here ... 8 hours away. It won't be empty. Perfect week for those who don't travel on Christmas but want to head down.

Then the marathon weekend. I believe based on last year it is closer to 35,000 runners and some families.

I went this past holiday last couple days of December and first 4 days of January and it was mobbed.
Even a few days after the holiday, i think that many people will take a personal day or 2 to extend their vacation time.

It's really not as bad as it sounds. I've done marathon weekend in 2015 and 2016. Crowds are average or just above average for the most part. I never had any major problems with crowds the entire week. The road closures are really only a problem on Sunday during the full marathon unless you have an early ADR on Saturday of the half.

We used to always do this week and it depends how the dates fall for school systems. On years where it fell school was out all week it was pretty busy. Next year Christmas falls on a weekend so many schools have the next two weeks off which puts their start date on the 9th. And the weekdays will likely be value rates on that week so it's a good time money wise to go. I would def book that week if I were trying to work around school schedules. But since I don't have too, I avoid it.

We were there the 1st-5th this year (usually Aug people). I don't think it was bad at all, the resorts were not too busy either (we received an upgrade at AoA and CBR). However, I think it depends on school calendars.

I know our school districts always go back that following Monday usually even if New Years falls on a Sunday. Sometimes we get lucky and they give that Monday off as well. I've done marathon weekend the last two years and haven't had any problems except maybe weather related.
