I will be in WDW for the half marathon in January, and will follow it up with a few days solo (my first solo vacation ever!). I am torn between AKV or OKW. Can anyone offer their opinions - which resort and why?

I enjoy both resorts. However, since this is your first solo trip, will you feel safer in a hotel environment? I bring this up because personally, I feel safer when I am traveling by myself in a hotel environment.

That being said, I have stayed at SSR twice solo and felt safe. However, I didn't walk around the grounds in the dark alone. Instead, I drove up to the Springs.

In view of your signature, and also my choice, I would pick AKV. I've had short solo stays at AKV, BCV and VWL. I didn't have a savannah view at AKV, but it was a great stay because I did spend lots of time on a balcony, reading, watching the animals, just having restful vacation.

I prefer the tropical atmosphere and the quietness of OKW. Watching animals outside has absolutely no appeal to me. I also don't like the look of the AKV, the darkness of the resort, and the arid style of landscaping. I live in the desert, so on vacation I want lush, green, and tropical. OKW fills that bill for me.

If you got an OKW 1BR, the whirlpool tub is so big that you could start filling the tub, run your half marathon, and the tub might almost be ready by the time you get back! :lol

I do almost think there are more places for an individual to hang out (various lounges/viewing areas) at AKV. If you plan on going to DTD or the SSR spa, then OKW might be better?..

I would choose AKV. I just love the theme, atmosphere and the savannas with the animals. Plus you have three great restaurants onsite.

Okay, you have picked my two favorite resorts. I LOVE OKW, and if you can swing a 1 bedroom unit and guarantee it would be in building 45 or 46, I'd LOVE to stay there as a solo trip. On the other hand, having a balcony overlooking the savanna with all the animals is one of my favorite pastimes at AKV. A solo trip there would have me spending a lot of time out on the balcony with the binoculars and my camera. The other thing that might be of interest is a nice little alone time at AKV concierge! Now THAT is how to pamper yourself!:thumbsup2

Alone, I'd choose AKV to be near all the restaurants and bars, store and other services.

If you are running the half, you can walk to the start on Epcot Center Drive from OKW. Otherwise, you have to catch a bus no later than 3:30AM from AKV. You'd want to be on Miller's Road at OKW, preferably Bldg 15 or 17 (I think it's 17). You walk through the CM parking lot, cross over Bonnet Creek Drive and the start is only a bit further from there. The race starts at 6AM, so you can almost sleep in until 4:30AM and start your hike over there at 5AM.

And that is my logical take on your question. Forget about subjective feelings. Bah. ;)
