Opinions-If you were staying at AKL, would you pick BOMA for your arrival dinner?

We are currently booked at Chef Mickey's for our arrival night but since we are booked at AKL, I was thinking of possibly switching to BOMA and enjoying the resort on our 1st night and relax for our big 1st day at the MK the next day. What do you all think? Not sure after having a 12 hr. plus drive, that we really want all the commotion of Chef Mickey's and having someplace more relaxed would be better for us. What do you all think? THANKS:lovestruc

I think it's a great idea. You will be tired after your trip and, personally, the last thing I would want to do after I checked in would be to go all the way over to Chef Mickey's for a noisy dinner. I'd rather just go downstairs and eat. It would take about three hours for the Chef Mickey dinner (including getting over there) and one hour at Boma.

Actually, what I would do for our arrival dinner would be to go down to the Mara and get a large pizza and bring it back to the room. Excellent pizza there.

i think that is a good idea. i just love boma!! one of my favorites is the peanut rice stuff. i love the akl too!
have fun!

We leave here at 1 am and have to stop in toronto for a few hours then down to disney we get in at 1 I figure we are going to be pretty tired the first day and are going to be hanging out at the hotel and catching up oon some rest so we are going to use a counter service the first night and go to the pepper market for a steak
then we are saving out last TS meal for the morning we leave we are going to Boma for breakfast I think we have to leave about 10 for the air port I figure having breakfast at the resort will make that day a bit less stressed and a good way to leave
So my vote is what ever one you think will make your day the least stress

I like both places. I honestly think either would work. The thing to avoid is driving yourself crazy second guessing your decisions. I just came back from a trip where we arrived at WL, and ate our first dinner at the Contemporary after a long drive. We actually ate at the steakhouse, but we were seated RIGHT next to Chef Mickey's. It was fine. The boatride over was very enjoyable. After dinner, we took the monorail around to GF and walked around that resort, too. (Before dinner we hit the pool at WL, and explored our home resort some.)

The one thing you'd save out on is GETTING from AKL to the Contemporary. Sadly, ther is no direct boat from AKL tot he Contmporary. You can however, take the AKL bus to MK, and it's rather easy to walk over to the Contemporary. The only catch might be getting back - but only if you have a VERY late dinner and MK is closing more than an hour before your meal is to be finished, which isn't very likely.(You could still get a bus back if it's a Princess party night very easily.) And even then, the Disney staff would find a way for you to get back to AKL.

Dining at Boma, you wouldn't have to go anywhere, and it would give you a chance to explore the resort at night, which is very pretty. Boma doesn't have characters to contend with, but it's still a buffet, so you still have to make trips up to get your food.

We often find that we don't get to spend as much time at our resort as we would like to spend, so that would be a plus of staying put. On the other hand, after spending so much time in the car we were bursting to get out and move around and explore. If only one person is doing the driving, then that person will be tired. We traded driving and found that whenever we got somewhere we were all eager to move a little after being stuck in the car so long.

Finally, the last thing (or maybe the first thing?) to consider is that it night not be possible to get a seating at Boma at a time that you like.

YES!! We are doing that same thing in October!! After that drive, you will want to stay put!! Enjoy the resort and have a great dinner!!

I think it's a great plan.

Our next trip, I am planning on making the first day relaxing. Dinner at the resort, pool time, *maybe* if the kids want to catch the fireworks at MK.

Not only WOULD I do it.....I DO do it.

Boma is always our "arrival" dinner the day we check in at AKL. The food is great, and it allows us to get a little more "downtime" for the night.

I agree with the others that after that 12 hour drive, you will be doing yourself a favor by just hanging out at your resort. And Boma has food for even the pickiest eaters. (Potatoes with Afritude reminded me of the potato wedges you can get at KFC.)

And AKL is a destination resort unto itself. At night, if you go to the Arusha Rock viewing area (the area off the lobby, just though the doors in the floor to ceiling windows) at night, there are cast members with night vision goggles. They also have storytelling around the fire pit just outside those doors, and it's worthwhile.

The front desk can provide you with a schedule of resort events when you check in.

I'm chiming in with another vote for Boma. Just thinking about it makes me want to change my reservation for May.

We've never been, and are not planning to go at anytime in the near future, to Chef Mickey's (so I can't tell you what that's like one way or another), but we, too, are staying at the AKL, and our arrival dinner will be at Boma, just like it was when we stayed at the AKL for the first time a few years back. It's a fantastically unique buffet.

Absolutely! Convenient because in your hotel and also I lvoe buffets on my first night so I don't have to wait to get my food if I am starving, no big decisions on what to order, etc...

Allow me to add to that:

I'm not sure WHAT your traveling party is..but if you have ANY kids, especially YOUNG kids, you may want to save CM's for a night when the kids might be more well rested.

They're going to LOVE the character interaction, more than likely, but after 12 hours of driving...I know our kids would be on their last oz of energy. And doing something like CM's, which is pretty high energy, would likely be setting us up for "meltdown city".

Boma's , on the other hand, keeps you close to home, might enable you to get some pool time, and has the EXACT benefit the above poster pointed out: No wait time for food..which is a HUGE benefit when it comes to the kiddlywinks, after a long day.

:)

I would switch. Boma is quieter and the food is great. After traveling we try to stay at our resort the first night.

Switch to Boma. You won't want to move around much after a 12-hour drive. And it's a great buffet.

OK, you just cost me about $170. ;)

After reading this thread I sat here and kept thinking about AKL so decided to see if there were still any AP rates left. I was able to switch from POR for the 5 days! Thanks for the little nudge to stay at our favorite resort. :thumbsup2

I have moved resorts 4 times now because of the board
we started out and the po now we are at AKL lol I just booked in Feb and I still have 9 months my brothers are taking bets on if I move any more time lol

I agree that you would be happier at Boma for your first night. Another thing to consider is that getting back to AKL after the parks is a trek... it would be much easier to eat there your first night (or any night that you'll be hanging around the resort) than to go back in time for dinner and then back out for the night. I always try to arrange my ressies according to park and we pick Chef Mickey's on our 2nd MK day. It's close and if we only spend 5-6 hours at MK then we're up for some fun at dinner! It's loud and crazy and if you are anything like me, you'll need some patience :rotfl: It is fun, don't get me wrong, but not any place you want to be if you are tired.

We went to Boma on our arrival night last year, and will probably do the same this year. Didn't stay at AKL though.
