To my knowledge that you can only order kids meals for adults at CS places, not TS. At buffets, everyone has to order, unless it's a child under 2 (I think it's 2...)

There are no restrictions preventing adults from ordering a child's meal. For example, at the (now closed) Concourse Steakhouse my wife would routinely order the child's meal that included a 4oz filet and never had any problems. It is just that the child meals tend to run toward hot dogs, chicken nuggets and mac & cheese as well as being small portions.

There is no such thing as a "kids buffet" or even an "adult buffet" at Disney. They have buffets with one section lower to the floor which has on it items that kids tend to enjoy (such as pizza, hot dogs, chicken strips, mac & cheese, etc.). Any person at the buffet (including children less than age three who are free) can get anything from any part of the buffet. So any buffet or othe All You Can Eat is strictly age-based.

Thanks for the quick responses. We are on the free dining plan for Thanksgiving Week, but we have a couple more TS than the 8 we get for free dining. We are using our free dining for 8 character buffets. Though I am still running the numbers to see if it will be worth it to upgrade to DxDP - but that is alot of food.

A couple of the restaurants that my DH wants to eat at my DD13 (who counts as an adult at WDW) and I didn't like some of the menu items, but liked the kids items (grilled chicken or nuggets) so I wanted to make sure that we could pay OOP at that restaurant for all of us and get us the kids meal and not an adult meal.

I often order off the kids menu at both CS & TS and many times have shared meals at both also. The portions tend to be large, so sharing to us, makes sense. At some TS places, they spilt the entree in the kitchen and will give you the same amount (read a full portion) of the side dish.

I/we have done both at TS (non buffet) and never had any problems. As long as you're paying, Disney doesn't care....

PS... if your waitperson says you can't, ask for a manager

I order kids meals oop and on ddp a lot (adults can get a kids meal as their adult ddp credit (talk about waste a credit)

I do order my drinks w/o ice so I get a little more, but normally I have a bottle of vitaimwater or sprite from the morning.

thanks again for quick responses.

We were on the DP in 2005 and the credits were pooled so we did the pay out of pocket for kids meals and shared alot. It was a waste the kids were 9 and 3. Now they are 13 and 7 - the 13 year old counts as an adult but still eats like a kid. I don't know if the credits still count the same (pooled) or are they seperated into adult credits/child credits?

For Table Service (including buffets) the credits are separate for children and adults. For quick service they are still pooled.

I don't do the dining plan but I have paid OOP for a child's meal at a table service restaurant. Unfortunately some of the children's options just aren't appealing. Another option for a light eater is to order an appetizer as your entree. Not sure if this is allowed on the dining plan either. But I know it is fine if you are paying.

The Plaza Restaurant at MK would not let me order the kids chef salad. I said I am a light eater and it would be a waste to order the large size. The CM would not budge, so I ordered the Chef Salad and left most of it on the plate. Next time I will order nothing and share with DH.
We were not on the dining plan.
Each TS has it own rules. At Artist Pointe I was able to order 1/2 portion of the salmon for $10 less then menu price.

Did you ask to speak with the CM's manager? I've ordered the child's desert at the Plaza with no problem so it doesn't make sense that they wouldn't let you order a child's entree.
