Our original plan for our first trip to California was to do all of the Southern California highlights, but save Disneyland for a separate trip so we could see everything. Now my daughter wants to just go to Disneyland for one day. We are Disney World veterans and we would like to try and hit the highlights in our one day there.

Would it be a good idea to only hit Disneyland Park and skip California adventure this time around? Is there any good strategy for just dropping in for a day? We will be there for the first full week of August 2018.

If you only have one day then one park is about all you'll have time for.
If you want to have a peek at both parks for a future trip you'll need a hopper ticket.

The longer park hours in August will help along with MaxPass.

I usually only go to DL for one day trips (it’s a nice getaway from LA). If you really want to see both parks, then get the 1 day park hopper with Maxpass. Its hard to get through everything but it may be easier now with MP. The last time I did the one day park hopper, MP wasn’t around yet.
If you get the park hopper, pick a few “must do’s” from each park. Realistically speaking, you won’t be able to do everything, BUT you’ll still see a lot. I highly suggest looking at the calendar for park hours. DCA tends to open later, and close earlier, so you have to be strategic when planning out rides/shows/meals.
If you decide on just going to DL, you can easily get through the major rides by midday with MP now. I honestly prefer DL over DCA. I feel like there is more to do and brings back those old childhood memories.

I think we will just stick with DL so we can see the majority of the good stuff. Maybe she can be talked into any day for DCA (wink wink).

I recently did a one day trip (solo). I got a hopper with MP. It was well worth it and I was able to do pretty much everything in both parks that I wanted.

How old is your daughter? An adult or a kid? Personally, I would probably choose just DL if you were planning on coming back for an extended trip in the near future, but if you think it might be a while before you get back then a hopper would allow you to see both parks (I would definitely get Maxpass if you want to ride any headliners in DCA like RSR and Guardians).

She just turned 18. We home school and this is her “senior” trip. We asked her where in the lower 48 states she wanted to go, and California won. This will be a first for my wife and myself as none of us have been any further west than Arizona.

Looks like now she wants to do 1 day at each park - we’ve raised her right...

Since I will not be staying on site, would I want to avoid the park with early entry/ Magic Morning?

Awesome! I would do a two-day park hopper if you can swing it, and start each day at the park without magic morning. So fun!

I should know this, but Magic Morning vs EMH - how will that affect us staying off-site and what is the park schedule for both?

The MM mornings are also Disneyland's EMH mornings so since you'll have access to neither you should definitely start in the opposite park.

If I get a two-day ticket, does it matter what day I use it? For instance, if we went to DCA on a Thrusday and DL the following Monday, would that be OK?

Yep, that's fine! I think you have two weeks to use all the days on your ticket.

If you get to choose days, I have found Wednesdays and Thursdays to be the best in general for lower crowds. Mondays and Tuesdays always seem more crowded. Of course you have to look at specific days/weeks because there might be something going on that would affect attendance at the parks.

Tues/Thurs/Sat is EMH/MM at DL. It's M/W/F/Sun for DCA.

So looks like Thurs 8/2 for DCA and Mon 8/6 for DL may be the best for us. Of course it's a ways out there but I don't want to hit an EMH park. We will be driving from our hotel about 30 min away but still want to get there at least 30 min before park opening. I am guessing summer opening hours are usually 8am?

We are Disneyworld vets, but have been to Disneyland in July for the last 4 years, and in June for a few years before that. If we had one day, we would absolutely hop. Hopping is nothing like WDW. It is a 5 minute process. You do not even go through security again to hop between parks. The parks are separated by a Plaza the size of a football field. WE literally have gone from the very back corner of DL to the very back corner of CA in 10 minutes. You don't want to miss at least seeing Carsland- it is amazing and we aren't even Cars the movie fans. Assuming everyone is old enough, you can single rider Radiator Springs Racers without too long of a wait, so if you were to hop over after Fast passes were gone you can easily do that. RSR is one of our absolute favorite rides in any of the U.S. Disney parks. You will never see Test Track the same way again. The Guardians of the Galaxy redo on TOT is really fun, if you like Guardians. Although I liked the look and theming of TOT, I was never a fan of the ride itself- and now I almost (LOL) enjoy it.

The nice thing about DLR, is you don't have to have a firm plan. You need to know what the most popular things are that you want to try, and you need to figure out the timing of those, but other than that, it has wonderful flexibility. The only thing we miss from WDW when we are at DLR is EPCOT, and particularly World Showcase. You can definitely hit all the main highlights from both parks- DH and I have done both parks in a day on a business trip once and ridden almost every ride in both parks, but it does require a fast pace! Two days would definitely be better- if you can swing it (we typically like 4 or 5- but would take whatever we could get). Evening entertainment will be difficult for one day- you will probably have to make a choice between Fantasmic and World of Color. I would say World of Color as it will be entirely different from anything you have seen at WDW, and if you can swing it and they still have it, I would recommend the dessert party. That way you get a chair. You get to wait for the show to start in a chair while having food and drink and you aren't forced to stand during the whole show, and if you are short like me, to risk seeing someone's back instead of the show.

If you can do the 2 days, that would be even better, but we would still do hoppers. I would feel constrained not to have hoppers at DLR. We have been known to go back and forth several times a day. Also, if one park is starting to feel really crowded, we look at the wait times and if they are shorter in the other park, we hop over. That can be pretty helpful in the summer months. I remember one July day last summer when we hopped to CA because the lines were getting long at DL, and the line for GOTG was only 45 minutes (which being new- that line was known to be 2 hours a lot of days), and RSR only 20 minutes. This was around noon, so not early in the morning. It was a great hopping day- we went back to DL later.

You don't need to worry about the EMH park at DLR like you do WDW, it will not make it significantly more crowded for the full day. They have a much bigger local crowd. The lines will be slightly longer if you get there at EMH end, but the first two hours of regular opening are typically still great. With the local crowd, a lot of people just don't get there that early.

DL, used to open an hour or two before CA, but since Carsland opened, they mostly open at the same time, which is usually 8:00 a.m. in the summer. CA closes before DL. In the summer, CA usually closes at 10:00 and DL usually closes at midnight. We often hop from CA over to DL when it closes (or usually if we are not at WOC that night we try to get out of the park before the rush after WOC to hop from one park to the other-- which still doesn't take that long- but typically there are no lines if you beat the rush).

Wow this is all great information! Thanks for easing my mind about planning. We are used to doing every little detail like ADR’s six months out, etc etc. RSR is definitely our priority along with the better version of Pirates, Indy, and other rides that we can’t do at WDW.
