I found this great article outlining online shopping for Canadians.

The point of most interest to me was in the section on brokerage fees, with a link to UPS fees.

I thought someone might find it useful :)

Thanks for the info. "whisper" but did you forget to include the link?

Oops! I think you forgot the link! :goodvibes

I'm very interested too as we just ordered a ring via Air Miles site and Diamond.com. It says free shipping via Canada Post so I hope there isn't mega fees involved with this? :furious: This is the first time I've ever ordered from a US website.

You usually only end up being hammered with fees if shipping is via UPS.

If it's sent USPS - Canada Post... it should be okay! :moped:

Thanks  . . I updated the original message with the link. :goodvibes

Well, that's not true. I have never had anything sent by courier from the States...only the postal service, and many times I have been hit with customs brokerage fees.

PanamaMike how much do these brokerage fees usually add up to? :guilty:

What a great article! We've been hit by brokerage fees before, the link in the article to the fee chart is great. Who knew paying for express shipping could save so much money! :cool1:
It doesn't mention though, that the brokerage fees are for collecting customs duty/taxes, which still would have to be collected. Even though we have free trade, anything made outside of the US/Canada/Mexico (or partly made) we have to pay taxes on.

We've been debating on buying our digital camera from the US, ($163 compared to $250) and that's the entire reason we haven't.

If at all possilbe, I try to order items only from US sites/companies that will include all of the fees for duties and taxes (and shipping of course) in the checkout total so that I know exactly what I am required to pay prior to the item being shipped, thereby avoiding any surprises when the package arrives!
