Online Check in for WDW

I'm not used to anything WDW. I see on the App that I can check in for my August stay. I haven't done it because that's months away. Do people actually check in that far in advance? Is there any reason to do it that far out? I'm going to arrive late in the day. I have another stay a few days later that I will arrive very early to. Is early arrival a reason to check in months in advance?

The only reason to check in this early is for your ease of mind, it's already done. It's likely that nobody at Disney will look at your reservation for assigning a villa until closer to a few weeks before your arrival date.

Related question, but did the room request options go away? I know there used to be some rudimentary ones like high floor etc but I don't even see those now.

I just did online check in and I had options for the Polynesian. I chose high floor. It also showed me building options, but I didn't choose one (yet).

I also checked in for Beach club and it didn't give me any options at all.

It depends on the resort. Some may not have any options.

As to room requests during online check-in, there used to be many for each DVC resort and then someone at Disney decided to eliminate most of them. Moreover, some of the online requests you can make during check-in now are ridiculous, e.g., at Jambo you can request high floor, which is pointless, since all DVC rooms are on the fifth floor, except for club level on the sixth floor; at Kidani you can request near an elevator, but the online check-in system does not allow you to designated which elevator, and with three elevator locations spread out along each of the two wings, a near elevator request can be met by putting you in any room in the building.

My personal rule is to ignore entirely the room request page during online check-in and instead make any location requests by contacting MS via email, chat or phone. Moreover, if you make a request through MS, you should not then use at all the room location request page during online check-in, because using that page will wipe out any request you made through MS.
