One year Amazon Prime membership for free with a .edu address!

I have a questions for all of you amazon people. DS used to order a lot of his college textbooks from half.com. I think he also ordered a few from Amazon. He is now teaching and my daughter is starting college. Do you all think the deals on textbooks are really good at Amazon? I was checking on some of DD's books and for the first quarter alone without all of her books we are up to $650.00 ! I would love to get the deal for her so that she could possibly save some money on her textbooks.

OP... is it okay to post this on here? I am not trying to hijack your thread!

Thank You! I had a Prime trial that was offered when I purchased textbooks last semester, but I didn't renew so this came at a great time since it's almost time to buy books again!

I emailed them and inquired about us teachers. (I should note that I don't have a .edu as a teacher. We have .com.) Here's the response I got:

Maybe we should get all the teachers we know to email them about some sort of Prime deal for teachers?

Good idea. I'll shoot them an email, too!

This deal is not as great as it sounds if you mostly purchase books due to the fact that Amazon Marketplace purchases are ineligible for free shipping.

I sell books on Amazon and I know that their prices are often much higher than the Marketplace Sellers. Here is a good example.

They are obviously trying to get students to purchase textbooks from them not the Marketplace Sellers

Yes, actually textbooks that qualify for Amazon Prime would already qualify for free super-saver shipping. It's practically non-existent that a new textbook would cost under $25.00. College students do buy other things though. Dorm room furniture and necessities.

Teachers don't generally buy textbooks. I buy picture books and teacher learning books for myself from Amazon. I think it would be a great thing if they'd let teachers benefit from the promotion, too.

Thanks for the link, that will save me a ton on shipping charges for my books and supplies next semester! :worship:

Now that means MORE MONEY FOR DISNEY!!!!!!

Thanks so much for posting! This will really help out with our Christmas shopping this year!

Just make SURE when you sign up that you set the features so that it doesn't auto-renew. I learned that when I had a free trial of Amazon Prime before. It will default to auto-renew, so you have to change that so they don't charge your card $79 when it is time to renew next year.

Free super saving shipping just means free standard shipping.

With the Prime account, you get it in two days for no shipping charge and it doesn't matter how much you spend. If you buy a $3 item, it'll be there in two business days at no extra charge. If you like to have your things quickly, Prime is great. If you are fine knowing that you ordered it and it'll get there in a week or two, then the free super saving shipping should be fine for you.

Well if there's a better deal available from a Marketplace seller, then an Amazon Prime member can still choose that option.

I'm sure that Amazon is running the promotion to get customers to shop with them. That's what stores do.

I am not seeing where to un-check the auto renewal this time like I did when I had the free trial last year. Anyone find it?
Thanks....

Nevermind--- guess I should actually read the "terms and conditions" since it appears that the auto-renew does not apply to the student membership free year :thumbsup2

according to Amazon:

"Membership Benefits
If you sign up for an Amazon Student membership, for the first year of that membership, you will receive one free year of Amazon Prime. We may choose to extend this free offer for more than one year. With Amazon Prime, you will be entitled to FREE Two-Day shipping and $3.99 per unit One-Day shipping on all eligible purchases for one year. The automatic renewal provisions in the Amazon Prime Terms & Conditions (which would require you to pay for Amazon Prime) do not apply to this membership, even if we decide to extend the free Amazon Prime offer beyond one year. There is no minimum purchase requirement. Amazon Student members will also be entitled to discounts and promotions, which we will communicate to you via e-mail or make available on the Amazon Student membership page at www.amazon.com/student. "

Thank you, OP!! I had recently renewed my prime membership, and now I get most of that fee back. :goodvibes

Thank you! Wow, I guess taking classes just to take some classes is playing off. Just got a email from Amazon saying they will refund me just over $66 from the Prime account I opened a month or so ago. :worship:

True that this does not apply to marketplace purchases. However, not all students purchase from the marketplace. As a grad student, my professors all seem to only be using the newest books, so I have to buy new, regardless. I saved $250, even still buying new, buying from Amazon each semester last year. And, to be completely honest, given that these are all books I will keep for references, I'm willing to spend a little extra for the new edition right now.
This also helps with Christmas and birthday shopping. I don't have much time to go shopping; I generally do my Christmas shopping online anyway, so why not have free shipping to go along with it?

Thank you OP!! I qualified for the free Prime since I'm enrolled in an on-line Masters in Ed. program. Yay! I had the free trial prime earlier this year and loved it.

They don't ask for credit card info, so I don't think they could auto-renew anyway.

Me too! I am getting a Masters of Education online as well. Mine is in Montessori education and I am so excited!
