Hi,

I was wondering if anyone knew of a decent, cheapish, car hire company for one way rentals between the West Midlands and Manchester Airport?

I have been trying to sort out our car hire, but it is coming in about 50% more expensive than last year. I paid about £85 each way last time, using National. This year they are quoting me £130! The cheapest I have managed to get it to is £115 using the National website.

I am trying to book a Skoda Octavia 1.6 or similar, and I would like it to have excess cover.
I would need to collect it on October 28th, and drop it at the airport on the 29th. Then collect the car for the return leg on November 21st, for drop off locally on the 22nd.

Thanks for any advice.

Have you tried enterprise, a friend used them and said they had good service from them and very reasonable cost?

Give Hertz a try and use discount code 766960 - from a random birmingham location one way was coming up at around £100 for that car class :thumbsup2

Thanks for the quick replies.

Tinks73 - I spoke to Enterprise, they charge a minimum of £50 for the one way fee, on top of the rental price.

bazzanoid - Thanks for that, it is coming out a lot cheaper than when I checked earlier. The same car was almost £45 more expensive a couple of hours ago!

No worries :)

I really don't see why they charge more for a one-way rental anyways - the car only gets added to the drop-off location's fleet anyway, it's not checked in on the system in any way different* :confused3

*at least not with Hertz anyway, I work for them

Try Alamo.co.uk, but I think they're usually the same as National.

Click on Hot Deals http://www.alamo.co.uk/Content/740/uk/HotDeals on that page click on AIRPORT CONNECT - One-way UK car hire - The easiest way to travel to, from or between UK airports.

Have used them in the past, they use to be very competitive but have increased in price like most companies.

Hope this helps.

Just found airport connect also on National web site so suppose it's the same as Alamo and it also quotes "From only £55, we not only offer great service and a range of clean and reliable cars, but you'll enjoy great savings too".
http://www.nationalcar.co.uk/Hotdeals/630/uk/zluk_airportconnect

Can't yet see a one way drop off charge when booking it this way (Airport Connect), whereas there is if you book from the normal car hire quote page, so hopefully it is cheaper than the quote you had and a charge it's not added later in the booking process, let us know how you get on?

I sometimes use the car rental brokerage sites such as carrentals.co.uk. They can often be significantly cheaper than the actual car rental sites.

Thanks again for the replies.

scoobydooby - We looked into that option, but it works out about the same price. As I have a few medical conditions it is just far easier to hire a car.

bazzanoid - Would you know what Hertz charge for the full excess cover? I can't seem to find it on the site. Thanks.

Samaya - I saw the airport connect option on National, but anytime I put my details in it returns a red box saying they can't give me a price. No idea why not, as the normal hire options give me a price for the same details with no problems.:confused3 Thanks for suggesting Alamo, I'll see if it gives me a price.

Paddyshack - I hadn't even thought of that option. Having never used them before I had no idea such a site existed. Thank you, I'll give that a try.

Just tried your departure dates on Alamo and National from Birimingham to Manchester and both gives me the same price starting at £49.00 for a Mini: Hyundai I10 or similar and for an Intermediate: Skoda Octavia 1.6 or similar at £58.

Good luck.

Thanks Samaya. Now all I need to find out is how much they will charge for the excess cover, and I can book.

I think we paid about £12.00 and that's payable locally at time of rental.

Try a local call to Alamo-National at Birmingham Airport on 01217825481 or Manchester on 01614993320.

Or an email for Pre Rental at alamoukweb@rentpremier.com

Thanks Samaya.

I've got my cars booked for £81.48 each way, that includes the zero excess cover.

I have now sorted everything except my ESTAs, and I will do those in October.

Thanks again to everyone for your help.:goodvibes

Glad to read you found a better price and best wishes for a great holiday, you're way ahead of us in the planning, we still have a few more things to do as well as our ESTA's and our holiday starts in April .:thumbsup2

Thanks for the good wishes bazzanoid and Samaya.:goodvibes

Samaya - I wish our holiday was as close as yours is! Have a fantastic time.
