Does anyone know of any car hire companies that provide rentals without the one way drop off fees?

We'll be picking the car up in San Francisco (in September) and dropping it off in either Las Vegas or Los Angeles a week or so later.

Also, are there any companies that don't put a monetary hold on cards? We use debit, not credit, cards and I don't want our travel money locked up for up to a month.

TIA. :)

I'm fairly sure that most of the main car hire companies don't charge a one-way drop fee between SFO and LAX. I definitely know Hertz doesn't for the rates we book ex New Zealand so I presume that's the same for everyone.

I was actually coming on here to ask a similar question :) we want to do a one way rental from LAX to San Diego and don't have a proper credit card as we always use our direct debit MasterCard or pre paid velocity visa and wanted to know if any car rentals will rent to us with one of these or should we bite the bullet and get a credit card?

Thanks. I'll look into Hertz. :thumbsup2

Maybe it's websites I've been looking at, but most seem to want to charge a one way fee.

Same here re the direct debit Mastercard. We also use our Qantas FF debit cards most of the time too.

We haven't used credit cards for many years and I don't want to have to bother getting one just for this one item.

We hire through Traveljigsaw.com.au. I believe they don't have one way fees. They are a 3rd party company who sell all the major car hire companies. If you call them they're very helpful and can probably tell you who will and who won't charge one way fees, and probably also about the credit card.
I haven't heard of any rental company who doesn't ask for a credit card though.

We have rented from Avis here no problems with a direct debit MasterCard so I hope we can find someone over there the same

Sorry, I don't know the answer to your question. But I do know that I would be quite nervous travelling without a credit card. Every car rental company and hotel I've come across has asked for a credit card as security. While a prepaid Visa may suffice, I imagine you would need quite a bit of extra money on it so they could put on hold. Plus I also look to my credit card as a form of security should I suddenly need a lot of money in a hurry (e.g. to book new flights).
A work colleague got stuck in Florida a few years back when a hurricane blew in. By the time he got to LA he'd well and truly missed his flights to NZ and he had to put new ones on his credit card. It took months to chase the money back from the insurance company.

Another vote for Traveljigsaw. We hired cars through them for our last two trips to the US, and were never charged one way fees. We have a car booked for our trip in September from Vegas to LA and there are no one way fees payable.

Their rates are pretty good too. Hope this helps.

In 2011 we hired from National pick up SFO, return LAX. I can't recall if there was a one way fee or not, the overall cost was reasonable though ( we had the car for 3 1/2 weeks)
