One time use points

I am wondering how booking with one time use points works. I have read that you have to call to but them and can only buy them to complete a reservation. Does this mean that if I'm only short 24 points I can book the reservation then call? Or do I have to have the points first? I'm worried about trying to get a really hard reservation right at 8am at 7 month mark and by the time I call and go through process of getting points the room will be gone.

No, you have to have the points to book. You will need to call to book and purchase the points.

If you are willing to take a chance, call and have MS book something now (more than 31 days away), that will use the number of OTU points you will need. Then cancel that reservation. The OTU points will be returned to your account and can be used to book online when the window opens for your desired 7 month reservation.

The gamble comes in if you are unable to get the reservation. You can waitlist, but if you don't get it, you will be stuck with the OTU points unless you have another reservation that can use them.

What I’ve done is book online as many nights as I can with my own points, as early as possible. Then call MS at 9 to buy the OTU points and complete the reservation.
