One time exception

Is there any such thing as a one time exception if you screw up with your points. I booked at Disneyland and although I thought I understood reservation points, clearly I didn't. I need to cancel now so all the points will become reservation points and I can't think of what I will do with them. I know there are many great options and we might just end up staying at a non-DVC Disney resort using them, but I was just wondering if there is anything like a one time exception? Like since this was the first time I made this mistake, kind of a forgiveness thing so that the points don't become reservation points. I am guessing and assuming the answer is no and I realize this is all my fault for not asking more questions, but I just thought I'd check!

I've heard of the super-duper secret one-time exemption if you blow your banking deadlines.

But whether they have the same flexibility for reservation points may be another matter. As I understand reservation points, they are gone. DVC no longer has them, so they may not be able to help you.

As always, it doesn't cost anything to ask...nicely.

yes thier is a one time exemption. I have used it. We were set to take some friends with us and they canceled two weeks out. I called and asked if thier was a one time exemption and was told yes. I then proceded to use it for our friends reservation and got the points backed and banked them in stead of them going to a holding account. It was made very clear to me that it was a one time only thing though.

Was this for a reservation that involved reservation points (ie, outside of the 7 DVC resorts)? Thanks.

the only way to be sure is to call MS and ask them.

when you first talk to someone - ask up front how long they have been there - if they say less than year or two - call up and try again.....

you want someone who has been there at least 5 years (if not 10)and know all the in and outs of DVC...

I'll probably call a few times. Maybe one of the times I will get lucky. I need to be 100% sure that I can't make the Disneyland reservation this summer though. When I know for sure I need to cancel I will make the call and report back as to what happens. Wish me luck!

They have given the option in the past but no guarantee they will nor or in the future. I too have use it. I have been told by MS that is is once per contract. Interestingly, I don't own that contract anymore but have two others that are totally separate.

I know it's been a long time, but I just wanted to update this post. I called on Monday and I was told I could put in a request to use my one time exception. We had an extenuating circumstance that I thoroughly explained to the CM and she said she thought it would come through and to call back in 24 hours. I called back Tuesday, no word, Wednesday, no word, today (Thursday), no word. I was planning on calling back tomorrow and I decided to just check the member website and my points were back in my account! I called to verify that my one time exception had gone through and they said yes!!! I am so happy, I would have really had nothing to do with reservation points, and we really did have a legitimate reason to cancel. The CM definitely stressed over and over (I think 3 times) that this is a ONE time thing, it won't ever happen again. I'm just glad everything worked out!

Congratulations, and it is nice to know that I have that one time exemption in my back pocket. Things like this show how great DVC really is. Anyone know if other timeshare companies give exemptions?

I've done it as well though it's been a few years. The rule was explained as once per contract. I no longer own that contract but do 2 others so I guess I'm safe for a while.

Yeah, she said once per contract. Unfortunately all our points are on one contract, so we've used our only exception! We have been members for 11 years so I guess we did pretty good, but it's kind of scary not having that anymore!

My understanding is if they are totally separate contracts, it would be one exception per contract. If they're linked, once total. But like all things DVC, it's subject to change.
