I read in the paper today that one of my former students died of cancer Tues. at age 28. You'd think that after teaching 15 years I would be used to this, but in truth I can only think of two other former students who have died. Gary was a very nice kid, very bubbly and one of my "youth-to-youth" kids when I ran it (that is the anti-drugs and alcohol group that I ran from 1988-1992). I'm debating whether or not to go to the funeral with my best friend, who is the drama director and directed him in the musicals. But you teachers can probaby identify with the sadness I feel today.

So sorry, Robin, to hear of Gary's passing. :( Sad. I can certainly imagine the sadness you must have, having been part of his life from years past. {{Hugs}} for you, Robin.

My sympathies. As a teacher we take our students accomplishments as well as their difficulties to heart. It is so sad to lose someone so young.

My first year teaching I had a student that was murdered in September and I was so shaken up over it that I couldn't go to the funeral. I regret it. It would have offered me some closure. Also it may have offered the parents a amall measure of comfort.

Very sorry about the sad news, Robin. Way too young . . .

If I were you, I WOULD go to the funeral. I believe the young man's family would appreciate knowing that you remember him and were thinking of him . . .

I'm a teacher and I'm 28. I can't imagine my life ending at this point.

I have lost a former student to a car crash, he was only 6. And last year one of my students mothers died, Mom was only 19. I went to both funerals and I'm glad that I did.

You don't realize how connected you are to your students, even when they are no longer yours. Your heart breaks for them in the same way it cheers them on.

I'm sorry you lost a student. I haven't lost a student but I've had some students come close and our school has lost a few. It's always very very hard. I would go to the funeral. It will help.

How sad when life ends so early.

I'd go to the funeral.

This year will be my 9th at my current school. Three students that I had when they were in 7th grade died during high school. Two were suicides and the 3rd was a hit and run last fall that is still unsolved. Also , two of my former students contracted cancer when they were in high school. Fortunately, they are doing well. It's hard to lose kids that you have had in school.

<SIZE=3>How sad you must feel. I'm very sorry to hear of his untimely death. Sometimes it's hard to make yourself go to a funeral especially for one so young, but I'm sure it will mean alot to his family to have your support.</SIZE>

I am sorry. It must be tough to see someone so young pass away.

I echo the sentiments expressed by Deb in IA. I think his parents would take some comfort in seeing you there.

I'm sorry to hear that about your past student. How sad that has to be for you.:( {{{{{HUGS}}}}

Yes, cancer sucks!!!!!!!!!

I would go to the funeral. I'm sure the family would appreciate it.

I was looking at my cousin's obituary in the paper last weekend(heart attack at 39) and there was a girl who passed away of colon cancer at age 20. I couldn't believe it.

Everyone should be allowed to live to 100!

I am so sorry to hear about your student. If it were me, the parent, it would mean an awful lot to me that my child's teacher remembered and cared enough to come and let me know they cared.
