One night at OKW

Well, it's been over a month, and I'm finally getting around to sharing a few thoughts about my first time at OKW. DW and I spent one night in an OKW studio (bldg 38, 3rd floor) then spent 5 nights in a 2BR with DS25 joining us for an early family Christmas.

I liked OKW, I really did. No real flames at all. I was a bit disapppointed with our balcony experience: the plus was that it overlooked the golf course and was visually very, very relaxing. However, there was a major on-site roadway just on the other side of the trees, and there was not one time from 8AM to 10PM (no I wasn't out there the whole time :confused3 ) where we didn't here significant traffic noise. Not a big deal, as this was a December trip and we were there one night. But if I had plans of getting some cold beers and dealing with the July heat on the balcony, I bet the constant noise would get on my nerves PDQ.

The most interesting thing I have to report, though, is that OKW reminds me of SSR!!! After lugging our suitcase up 2 flights of stairs (thank you, SSR elevators), the view of the rooms from the top of the stairs looked just like the outside hallways of SSR - even the coloring and trim were remarkably similar. Hey, that's fine with me - I love the look of SSR. I was just a bit confused, as I've read so many comments about SSR's look and feel (external hallways, pastels, cement walkways) yet OKW has these all, too.

I can see how, if someone is staying multiple days in a studio, the extra room would come in handy and alleviate any cramped feelings. We loved the common areas, although we did drive there - and enjoyed a great boat ride to DTD and back during the one warmer night of our trip. I certainly will put OKW near the top of my list (after SSR, of course). Next trip already booked: May 31 - June 6; arrival day at BCV, then on to SSR.

IMHO - YMMV

Glad that you liked your visit to my home!

I've really become an OKW fan after a few stays in teh past year. I'll be honest that the retirement home decor originally put me off, but once I actually stayed in the large studio and enjoyed the peace and quiet, I was hooked.

Glad to hear it, Dr. T! BTW, building 38 is one of those odd shaped buildings. I have never stayed in any of them configured like that.

Bell Service is available at OKW Dr T & they're very happy to help ! Just wanted to let you know should you decide on a second stay there one day. Thanks for the report :thumbsup2

That's interesting - I guess I thought they were all the same - a sort of loop hallway that starts and ends at the stairs, with about a dozen doors all around.

And we'll definately be staying there again (and again): we do love the condo-style DVC resort more than the hotel-style ones....

that sounds like most of the building I have been in at OKW.

blame your noise on the Hurricane - it took down 50% of the trees surrounding OKW.

there was a time when you couldn't even see OKW (because of the trees) along those roads....

believe me having gone before the hurricane and after the hurricane there is definitely more noise...

but it is Florida and in the south trees grow fast - give it around 5 to 10 more years and most of the trees will be back...

there are some weed trees that I didn't think disney would want - but since they aren't encouraging anything else in those areas - the weed trees will definitely be there...
