Zoe is 4 and has mild ASD. We work hard on manners/social skills at home. Yesterday, she said, "thank you newspaper" We have no idea what she was thanking the paper for. It cracked us up. :goodvibes Clearly, we need to work on manners for animate objects, vs, inanimate!! The holidays are hard on her. We entertain at our home a lot, so she has a familiar space to retreat to. She's mentioned her bus driver and aide a lot this holiday. Poor kiddo, she is missing school. I hope everyone else is having a good holiday.:goodvibes

One of my kiddos with autism reached 75% mastery saying "thank you" spontaneously (ABA program). His mom requested that they just move to maintenance because there are no 4 year-olds in the world who say "thank you" 90% of the time. :rotfl2:

It is great that ZOE misses school (even though it is hard on you).

I know it is to late this vacation, but she is probably old enough to begin benefiting from the “mind reading” program created by the Autism program of Cambridge University. It is a computer program, which teaches TOM skills. It is about $120 but is amazingly broad and adaptable. It does take some work for the facilitator (you) the set up but is video real world based with various “actors” so it has excellent generalization potential.

For parents who are ready to move beyond the one skill mode of primary ABA it produces crucial part of the puzzle to be able to generate broader skills and to have significant potential to generalize them. A lot of clinicians have started to integrate it into ABA programs, which have moved to the generalization mode.
