Ok, just to make sure:

Is it best to carry on the food we are bringing with us (cereal, pb, snacks, etc) or to check it.

Is it better to take every thing out of their boxes/packages. I don't mean to open the food, but just to take them out of their boxes. We are flying SWA and I must want to make it easy on everyone.

We usually do a grocery stop, but we are getting in on a Sunday night at about 10:15. The Kash n' Karry that we usually go to is closing - although it may be open for this trip). I
Hopefully there will be something else so we can get our water, milk, and soda.

Thanks.

I put everything in my checked baggage and I don't take anything out of their boxes (things tend to get crushed). If it affords easier packing for you, however, go ahead and take it out of the box.

That is what I thought. Boy, if they ever opened the bag they would think Wow, this woman must really love snackies:teeth: :earseek:

I am going to send an email to Cartier and ask them if we can stop there! This is perfect!

We haven't tried this yet, but will another week.

You can fax your grocery list to Albertsons ahead of time and they will shop for you. You need to tell them your name and when you are arriving. They will shop for you one or two hours before you arrive. Anything that needs refrigerated will be kept in their cooler.

Here is their address and contact number:

12981 South Orange Blossom Trail
Albertson's Phone (407) 857-5666
Alberston's Fax (407) 857-0132

I spoke with them on the phone and they seem very helpful. There isn't any additional charge for this (although I would be willing to pay something for that convenience).

We get back on February 9th. If you like, I'll let you know how well it worked.

Wow . . . Albertson's worked well . . . . we faxed the order two days in advance . . . called them from the airport to confirm . . . when we got there, our order was bagged and in a cart just ready for a final payment.

Grocery shopping in two minutes

Did you have a large order or did you also bring food with you on the trip? I am just thinking about carrying all of those plastic bags, along with all the suitcases, into the resort. Did they pack the food in boxes? We are getting in late on a Sunday night, so most likely there won't be luggage service - although I know they will let us use a cart to get to our room.

Thanks and have a great day.

FYI: this is from the TSA website:
www.tsa.gov

"Packing Tips

Do not put film in your checked baggage. Some of the new checked baggage screening equipment will damage undeveloped film.

Avoid packing food and drink items in checked baggage.

Avoid over-packing your bag. This will make it easier for the screener to reseal your bag if it is opened for inspection. If possible spread your contents over several bags. Check with your airline or travel agent for maximum weight limitations and any fees that may apply

Spread out books and documents within your baggage; do not stack them on top of each other.

Consider putting personal belongings in clear plastic bags. This will reduce the chance that a TSA screener will have to handle them."

but if people are packing food without incident, maybe it's just certain types of food that are the problem?

momoftwins: we brought several grocery bags into AKL last year and they kept them cold for us until our room was ready. I won't bring as much this year -- a lot of it went to waste.

This is a great idea. anyone know which grocery store FL tours stops at and whether I can fax that one?

On your email confrmaton, just remind them thatyou want a grocery stop at Albertson's...we just did this...no problems!

Andy and his drivers are excellent!:sunny:

Expect that any bag containing food *will* be opened and inspected, but as long as the packages are factory-sealed, they will just take a look and close it back up again. The reason for the TSA recommendation against it is that food, particularly dense things like chocolate or sausage, or things in metal tins, tends to be kind of opaque on the x-ray scanner, and will trigger a hand-search -- they prefer you don't bring it because it slows down the screening process.

For the sake of other passenger's baggage, avoid putting anything perishable in checked luggage, and also be very careful when packing containers of liquids, or anything in glass. The best way to pack that stuff is in a hard cooler, doubled-bagged in clear plastic and cushioned w/ absorbent towels in case of leaks. However, don't seal it, b/c the airline will need to look inside to verify that there is no ice in the cooler; a luggage strap is the best way to keep it closed. (Ice and dry ice are not allowed in checked bags.) BTW, the airlines will not accept opened containers w/ liquids in checked luggage. The factory seals must be in place, so don't try to ship home that half-bottle of wine or an opened jar of pickles. If you must bring perishables, carry them on, but still, protect against leaks; you don't want something dripping out of an overhead bin.

I still think you are best off buying food in Florida, except for those items we cannot get there. I dunno, maybe soymilk or silken tofu, maybe salt cod? I cannot think of too many foods you will not be able to buy more cheaply in Florida than we can here in Massachusetts. Well, maybe Asian food items, but I can live without my shao mai and cha siu bao for a week while I am down there (and do not ever try to go for Chinese food anywhere in the greater Orlando area; it is unremarkable at best, terrible most of the time).
And don't forget the sunscreen (we redheads need our sunscreen).

I think the pre-ordering with Albertsons would be a good call:
Grocery shopping in two minutes

Sounds good to me.

Thanks for posting this. I have been wondering about this myself.

We are going to by flying for the first time in a long time in the next month. I am planning to pack snacks for the kids in ziploc bags and am wondering about the reference to factory sealed. That is just so they don't have to open each box right? Just making sure. I will have fruit snacks and cereal bars in clear ziplocs. Not bringing them in the boxes cause with three kids that is two boxes of each one and they take up too much space. We have always shopped in FL before, but we are taking Disney transport from airport to hotel so don't have any other options this time. Not bringing any chocolate or sausage!

Yes, it's so they won't need to open the boxes. Things like fruit snacks are usually individually sealed, so not bringing the entire outer box is not a problem.

The issue with factory-sealed packages is that if the seal is broken, the original contents might have been replaced with a hazardous substance.

Just fyi, with 3 kids and two adults you can get a towncar for about the same price or maybe even less than "disney transport" (aka, Mears). With a towncar you avoid the cattle call, only stop at your resort, (Mears stops at many) and you can take advantage of the complimentary grocery stop. HTH

Thanks, NotUrsula

That's what I was assuming.

As for the transportation, we are doing a land and sea package with transfers and we are not paying for it, so the towncar is not an option for us. Thanks for the info, though!
