One more question about points usage?

Hi. I am about to book my honeymoon aboard the Disney Magic

We are looking to go Dec. 4th, 2010, the eastern carribean.

We are getting a category 5, with verandah, and it is 482 pts. total for the two of us.

It is a lot, but we priced it as if we were paying cash, and we end up saving $300 (give or take) while using our points.

I'm still trying to decide if it;s worth it to use the points, or just use the points for one of us, and pay cash for the other one. :confused3

IF we go on all points, we are using some from 2011 as well, and are only left with 72 for the following year.

Can't really help on whether you should use points rather than cash, that is your choice but my understanding is that you won't be able to book the two of you in the same room, one for cash, one for points because you cannot mix the two for the same room reservation.

If you pay cash and rent you points for $10 per point, I show that you will have a extra $1000 to play with.

Using your points for anything other than DVC resorts is not a good value.

:confused3 I'm sorry, I'm so new to this
What do you mean by "rent" our points for $10 PP?

Thank you in advance for explaining :hippie:

Now that makes more sense. I saw the same post by the OP on another thread and I couldn't understand how the cruise could have gone up that much in price in a year (we're on the Dec 5 2009 eastern cruise and paid less than $3,000 plus got $400 OBC).

I'd add that rather than rent my points, I'd transfer them to another DVC member. Less risk to me.

Are you sure about this? I pretty sure I've seen posters that have done that before - use pts for 1 person and cash for the other.

Remember, if for some reason you have to cancel your cruise, you will have to pay another $95 to rebook. Or should you choose to not rebook, you won't be able to use your points for any DVC stay. They will become reservation points and must be used for a non-DVC stay.

Actually you can do one points and one cash as long as you pay for one entire adult using points. You have to pay the contract price which is typically higher than the early booking discount.

The price I'm seeing for 2 is about $3500 vs 482 points. Given the relative value of the points and the negatives of using points for a cruise, it seems an easy choice. Remember there are huge penalties for using points even if the dollars are a break even which is about the best you can do.
