We will be spending a week at the ocean, about an hour drive from WDW, and plan to drive over for one day visit. We have went on several week long trips but I am thinking this is slightly different. We go on the 23rd of this month and haven't bought our tickets yet. At this point would it be better to buy tickets the day of? We have chosen to go MK. Since we don't have tickets we don't have any FP. Rope drop is 9 am so we are planning to arrive around 8 and try to get on 7DMT then follow touring plans recommendation from there. We will be eating QS, no ADRs. Do you have any other tips? What do I need to think about that I am missing.

If you know you are going, you could buy your tickets now, link them to your MDE account and pre-book 3 FP+. That would give you a jump start on lines for the day. If you would rather wait until the day of, I would go to 7DMT at rope drop and then head over to the FP+ kiosk in Fantasyland and try to pick up some FP+ then. There is no reason to tour without utilizing FP+ even if you are only going to book them day of. You will be at a disadvantage booking day-of, but you'll get something.

Unless you have reason to think you won't use the Disney one day ticket then I would go ahead and book them online just to take advantage of making FPs. There is much better selection now than day of (although you may be able to score some "high ticket" Fps the night before or morning of when people change plans and cancel them).
