Here's the scenario: we're staying at OKW from sun-thurs, and were doing our typical "where do we stay saturday night" and the FW campground popped up. So we said, why not!

We're driving down, and we have a tent (christmas present, never used), four sleeping bags, and an air mattress. What else do we need to make it one night?

I know, we're nuts :scared1:

Thanks in advance for all your advice!

Hey, we'd never laugh at anyone for wanting to go to the Fort!! If you are going in hot weather you'll want a fan. A couple of towels for the comfort station and your regular bath toiletries and you should be set for one night.

Just be careful.....many people have done this and gotten the Fort Wilderness bug. Symptoms? You start going to rv shows, reading the FW Dis board first, counting rv's on the road, noticing all the people who have rv's that you've never noticed before, wishing for an rv smilie........

Wow! An impromptu stop. :woohoo: Not Laughing here. I'm wishing I could do the same. Have a great time at the Fort.

We basically only had the items you described (minus the air mattress) when we did one-nighter's with the cub scouts. My only concern would be that you will need to pack up in the morning and the tent will have a lot of moisture from condensation. You have to air the tent out within the next day or two or it will get mildew.

Nah, you are not nuts! You will be susceptible to the FW bug. It is highly contagious, as mentioned earlier!

The FW bug is so contagious it can even be contracted over the Internet! I would love to stay at FW sometime and I've never been there!

Thanks, everyone!

We already have the bug for FW, every time we're down there we find some excuse to go over to FW and decompress-the beach, Trail's End, look at the horses, the peacocks, the kids want to ride the ponies.

We've actually been to some rv shows lately, there's a trailer called the Echo that we're somewhat fascinated by. But since I need to build a garage before I get any rv equipment (the one we have now is a 1 car and it's falling down because the original owner turned the attached garage into a family room) I need to get that first.

ah, but I can dream...

We can air out the tent on the porch at OKW once we check in, I think....although doing that didn't occur to me at all, that would have been a "find the stink" ride home (not the first).

The comfort stations don't have towels? That would have been entertaining-honey, give me all your t-shirts, I need to dry off!

Don't bother looking for the peacocks. They are gone. You'll find lots of bunnies, armadillos and ducks though.
Also, with your regular toiletries, in case you don't already, bring your own soap and shampoo. They don't supply them at the campground like they do in the hotels.

Have a great time!!!

what happened to the peacocks? Why are they gone? Here's one of my kids with one in March 2005 (sorry for the blurring, I don't believe in putting kids photos online)

Can you build a campfire on your campsite?

Can I bring candles?

Did anyone else see Wild Hogs where they set their tent on fire.

Hmm, maybe glowsticks would be better.

Should we do a campfire or not?

You can't build a campfire at your site--only charcoal in your grill for cooking (though I assume you will eat your meals out?). We just got back and actually did not need to air out our tent! I don't know how it happened but we woke up in the morning (around 7 am) and everything was completely dry! You may want to bring a tarp to set your tent on or it will be very sandy/wet from the ground. And bring bug spray!

If it's a tent you don't mind ditching if it does get mildew on it, then I'd say go for it. :thumbsup2 If you want to chance it and it does get mildew on it, you can TRY cleaning it with a mild soap and water but I'm doubtful it will kill the mold. About the only thing that will kill the mold is bleach and you can't use bleach on a tent. Even if you think the tent is "dry" which it really could be if you tented in the dry desert, but the Florida humidity is H-E-double-hockey-sticks on tents.

You can't build a fire, but you can head over to the campfire sing along and movie at the Fort and add another thing to the list of things you'll love about FW.

BTW, there is no cure for the bug. Once you catch it, you're infected for life!! Just ask my DH. He's tried everything and he's still going back in December.

Hey, I know that peacock!

He was delicious.

It's a SHE! And, ew!

bummer that they moved. The kids had perfected the "Ker Raw Ker Raw" call that they make, and the birds would always call back from the trees.

Anybody know what time the campfire things start that night, or have a good thread to point me towards?

We did it! We camped! Although I think it was sort of cheating because we got there around 5 pm on saturday, and there was a light rain falling. We were at campsite #1504, right next to the comfort station. At first I thought that was really good, but then later on at night I could hear the door opening and closing and it was kind of annoying, so next time I might ask for one a few away.

Anyhow, we got there and put the tent up, it went right up with no trouble. I think it's called a Wegman or something like that. We put up the rain fly (is that right?), put the blow up mattress in there, and zipped it up and took off for the Magic Kingdom. We were going to do the campfire but at that point it was raining hard enough that we thought ponchoes at the MK would work better.

We ended up staying at MK until midnight, stumbled back to our campsite (totally forgot what color bus we were supposed to get on but the bus guys were really nice-at least we remembered what loop we were in), and pulled the sleeping bags and pillows out of our car and crawled in and konked out. It had stopped raining around 10 pm so everything was fairly dry.

We ended up turning on the fan inside the tent not because we were hot, but the CRITTERS outside made so much noise! An armadillo  kept walking past and making snuffling noises, and there were other interesting non-human noises going on. We were really not used to it, but we thought it was neat. The fan muffled the sounds o' nature enough that we could sleep.

We got up the next morning, the kids and I had totally kicked my hubby off the air mattress at some point during the night and despite the good sleeping bag he said he got a little cold. There's enough room for one more mattress (twin sized) to squeeze in there so I think we'll do that.

We didn't get to make smores or do the other awesome stuff that FW has, so we want to come back and do it again. I didn't want to crack open the suitcases to get our clothes and toiletries for a shower, so we rolled over to OKW around 10:30, rumpled and vaguely smelly, and thank goodness they had a room ready-we totally weren't expecting it, we usually check in early and then call around 3 when our room's supposed to be ready, so it was very nice.

Next time I am definitely bringing some twinkle lights (saw a lot of those), and a suitcase just for being at FW that I can open and get everything I need without messing up the other suitcases.

There was definitely a sense of familiarity and neighborliness that I haven't experienced at the regular hotels and to a somewhat similar degree at the DVC's, but I loved how everyone was expertly chilling out at FW.

Thanks for all the advice, it was an adventure we'll be repeating. Although I don't think I'm going to trade in my DVC for an RV just yet, we're definitely going to be camping more at FW.

ps My husband pulled into the campsite and said, There IS a grill here! I couldn't remember!:rolleyes1 Well, maybe I did and just wanted Trail's End that night instead of hotdogs...
