Yesterday, was our first trip to Disney World since last March (we were there the week of closing, and by the skin of our teeth got our vacation in)- and haven't been back since. We, my daughter and I, are DVC members and try to go twice a year, and once in a magic moment, squeeze in 3. In quarantine, coming from NYC, it proved impossible all last year to make it down there.
I planned this trip, several months ago- when I knew we were moving to Miami, and we could DRIVE to WDW. WOW. I mean, talk about exciting!! So, with lots of magic and meticulous planning, our trip was set. We even went so far as to do table service meals almost every time, something we don't really do, because of timing and money. But, I wanted it to be special. Might I add, I splurged on getting a Magic Kingdom view room at Bay Lake Tower. YESSS.
All packed up and organized like a crazy person, snacks ready to go, little Disney surprise bags for my daughter to open along the way- my playlist set. We were psyched and ready to get on the road!
No traffic, cruising along. About an hour from Orlando, my (second) Covid PCR test came back, POSITIVE. My heart dropped. The night before, I had taken a antigen blood test, NEGATIVE. How could this be? Yet, hear we were. My heart now racing, mind racing.... I pulled off the highway, started to tell my daughter that my test came in positive, and we may have to cancel our trip (I say 'may', because I was trying to tell her gently, clearly I had to cancel)- I then googled and went to a rapid testing facility, I immediately tested positive, my daughter (who had sniffles for 2 days but we felt it was a common cold, which it was) tested negative.
My daughter was HYSTERICAL. I was trying to keep it all together. I kept thinking, THIS CAN'T BE. I mean, THE DAY WE DRIVE TO DISNEY? WHYYYYYYY......
My poor 9 year old. Sobbing tears. Crying over all that she was looking forward to. OMG. Can you imagine a worse thing? To go to Disney and then have to turn around and cancel the trip?
I then called DVC Membership and told her (after waiting an hour on hold, literally 56 minutes): I have a whopper for you.
And then proceeded to tell her briefly, what happened. She sounded very concerned and saddened, and said, hold on I'm going to call the hotel. She/Disney refunded ALL my points, no penalty- and canceled ALL my dinners, no penalty. WHEW.
I then proceeded to book the February weekend to make myself feel better, and my daughter. We upgraded to a 1 bedroom at the Beach Club, which we've never stayed at because it's always booked.
So, to all who are in Disney World right now, please enjoy it for us- we would have been paraded around with the happiest of faces under our masks. Be thankful for all your trips there, because even in our crazy world and with all the restrictions, it's still the most magical, wonderful, happy places on Earth.
