Hi there we have never sailed before and I was just thinking do the gift shops ever sell out of the nice stuff? I assume they are not able to refill inventory during a sailing so would it make sense to shop for any souvenirs on the first day or two? Has DCL been known to run out of the nicer stuff or more popular items? I had read online that they sell the butter knives from animators palate can anyone confirm this and what the price would be? Does this item sell out or have limited availability ?

Sometimes they even don't get stuff at the beginning of your cruise. I cruised in October and again in November on the Fantasy. A friend asked for a few things I had bought for myself in October and a certain keychain and magnet were not in the shop. I asked and the CM told me they were not in the delivery. She didn't know if the person putting in the orders made a mistake or whether it was the logistics department that 'had forgotten' or was 'out of stock' themselves... so I guess there are never guarantees...

I think it depends on what you consider the "nice stuff". I have been on a cruise where they've run out of the DCL exclusive Pandora charm and a cruise where they ran out of the Castaway Cay 5k pin.

The Animators Palate butter knives are sold onboard and are $10. I'm not sure if they always stock them because there have been cruises where I haven't seen them but I will also admit I wasn't looking for them.

If you are on an itinerary where Sea Treasures stocks location specific items (i.e. Norway or another Europe cruise) and has a vendor they partnered with to bring said items onboard that vendor sometimes has the ability to request certain items in the next port when they run out of stock.

Edit: I've also seen them have different stock in different areas, for example if a pin set you want isn't available check for it on Officer Pin Trading night because they pull out that portable case with pins so they sometimes have some different stock in it.

Yes they run out of stuff that doesn't get restocked. We did a back to back, and they sold out of a D&B purse that my wife had wanted. Didn't come back. Found it about 8 months later at Disney Springs in the Co-Op. Bought it, and used an AP discount on it.

They also ran out of the 4 ships picture that is in some of the staterooms. We got the last one.

Moral of the story, if you like something, buy it when you see it, especially for clothing. The right size matters

I’m now debating if a butter knife in my checked luggage would get taken
Ours didn't. I don't see why it would - it's checked luggage.

We took the last Alaska cruise of the season in 2012 and the store was out of almost everything Alaskan. I so wanted the nesting dolls I had seen on here but they were sold out long before our cruise. On the plus side, the stuff they did have was marked down. So I got a great DCL Alaska sweatshirt on sale.

On my second night of a seven day cruise we were low on shampoo but okay for conditioner but my daughter and I wash our hair every day and have very thick and long hair to our mid back. Our cabin host had said there was no more shampoo and I would have to go up to the gift shop to buy some.

The ship’s gift shops were out and never got any H2O back in. Although they felt our Castaway Cay stop a few days later would refill supplies. It was never restocked and we had a little bit of shampoo that we brought with us, and my daughter and I didn’t wash our hair on CC morning or the night before which helped us stretch it out the conditioner.

Our cabin host didn’t give us another bottle until the evening of our CC visit (day 6) which I’m very thankful of because we were down to bar soap for our sand filled hair and the last bit of conditioner.

They also ran out of suitcases and some souvenir I noticed the first night but didn’t want to clutter the room.

You can always return it on the ship if you have buyers remorse.
