We are going on our first disney cruise in July. If I find a cruise now that I want for next Spring. Can I book it now to lock in best price and get the 10% off of that onboard in July?

You can not get the 10% off on an already booked cruise. Your best bet is to book it now. When you are on the ship, check to see if the price of the cruise has gone up more than the 10% discount. If it hasn't, cancel and rebook. If it has gone up then you already have the better price.

agree with Kristi, we ended up saving more by booking on board and just ended up cancelling our pre-booked one at no charge

another thing to consider -- some cruises are "blocked out" of using the onboard booking discount. there's a chance the cruise you will want to go on next spring will not qualify for the discount. So yeah, book with your agent when the dates come out and then see what's eligible for the discount!

If you book online & then on the ship, you will have to put a 2nd deposit down. You can't just move the first one over when you cancel and rebook. You have to wait until after you get home and contact Disney.

if booked not using a t.a., when you rebook onboard you should not even have to cancel your cruise. they will use the same booking number and original deposit but apply the discounts.
now, if you booked with a t.a. then its a different story altogether.

They apparently cannot use the original booking number and deposit, because when I went to do this on our last cruise earlier this month, the DCL rep onboard said that she had to create a new booking with a new reservation number and a new deposit. (Note that no travel agent was involved; I had made the old reservation online myself.)

One concern I had was the possibility of losing our stateroom assignment during this exercise, but she assured me that there was no danger of this happening.

Once she created the new reservation, she then offered to cancel the old reservation, or indicated I could do it myself when I got home. (I had her cancel the old reservation.) She said the the old deposit would be refunded within 5-7 business days.

One issue I did have was that I also rebooked for my sister who is going on our upcoming cruise, but who was not with us on the last cruise. Because they could not transfer her deposit, I had to put my sister's deposit on my credit card and have her pay me back.

that's interesting. it has not been my experience with the booking on board system. we have been able to re-shop without canceling more than once which is why I sometimes didn't use the t.a.. I do find that they are not consistant in most of what they do so who knows. I did not rebook on our last cruise, first time in a very long time, so I could only say my latest experience is from 16 months ago.
