I'm hoping for clarification on two things: 1) If you prepay your onboard account with gift cards when you board, how are you refunded in the (unlikely!) event that you have $ remaining on your account at the end of cruise? 2) If you prepay your account with gift cards, cash, etc and you have OBC, is the OBC amount automatically debited first as you incur charges during the cruise? Thanks for any help with this.

There refunded to the cards if thats the last thing you credited the account with, they do it in reverse order. Last credit is refunded first. -Keep your cards.

OBC is used first.

Generally the order that charges are credited to your onboard account is - any OBC (non-refundable) that you have will be taken first, then the refundable OBC (if you have any). Then gift cards. Then whatever method you have chosen to back up your account (credit card, debit card, cash). If you have any credit left on your onboard account it is refunded back (in reverse order), so keep those gift cards handy, since they would be first in the "refund line".

Thank you. If I do have remaining credit do I need to go to Guest Services to get the gift cards refunded, or will that be done automatically?

Does this refund rule change if you use a Disney Vacation Account? Will they just refund the balance to my DVA if I don't use the OBC I apply?

I'm not sure. The times we've used gift cards, we never had any left over. :teeth: I believe I've read that some people haven't actually gone to Guest Services and the amounts were refunded anyway. But, in my comfort zone, I'd probably go to Guest Services to "settle up".

I think I'd feel safer too. Thanks!

Thanks for asking this, as I had wondered as well! If you book a cruise on board, that deposit is charged to your on board account, correct? Just trying to decide how many gift cards to plan for.

I've read that it has to be done with a credit/debit card.

I've also read that you can buy a gift card in the shops and have deducted from your on board account. So for example if you have $50 left you should be able to buy a gc for that amount.

I'm glad a PP asked this. Can anyone also confirm the OBB cannot be charged to your onboard account? If so, I guess I never realized that because I haven't looked into it before.

It's my understanding you have to provide a credit card or other actual payment at the time of booking. It can't be charged to your onboard account.

This is what I have found also. They always ask for a form of payment - they do not charge it to your stateroom.

can i ask if i add cash/credit to my onboard account how do i do this? with a credit card? we're from the UK

thanks.xx.

Does this refund rule change if you use a Disney Vacation Account? Will they just refund the balance to my DVA if I don't use the OBC I apply?

There are different types of OBC. If you book onboard and get a credit from DCL, those are nonrefundable so that if you don't use it up, the balance is simply gone. If you add your own OBC from your DVA and don't use it up, then it does get refunded to your DVA. I had that situation in January when we could not dock at Castaway Cay, so the expected expense of two cabanas didn't happen.

It you want, you can then get a refund from the DVA in whatever format your deposits were made in (Disney gift cards/debit account). I think the order of refunds in based on the order of deposits, but I'm not sure. So if you fund your DVA with gift cards and expect that you might want a refund, you need to hold unto the original cards. Another option would be to use the refund in the DVA to purchase a new Disney gift card. According to the FAQ you can request a gift card between 5 and 1000 every 90 days. I just left the refund in the account for the next cruise.

You do it pre-cruise via the "in-room gifts" link on the DCL website. You download and complete the form. Then either mail or fax it to the number provided. The onboard credit section is about 1/2 way down on the right side of the form:

I know my travel agent has an option for "Add to Shipboard Account" in there online payment web form, rather than using the in-room gifts and mailing/faxing the request. I haven't booked directly with DCL so I don't know if if they have an option to do this as well. If you have a vacation account (won't help someone from the UK) you can call an 800 number for DCL and apply funds from that to your onboard account.

How and when do you add Disney gift cards to your account?

Also can you purchase stuff at the gift shops and pay there, or is it always charged to your account?
