Ok, last year I got burned on my suitcase. It is large, it is the same one that I have been using for 5 years (2 trips a year). So I get down to Orlando fine, however on the way back I am told that it is bigger than the 62 inches. I asked how come I was not charged on the way down. Anyway I got hit with a $75 fee or lose my bag. (very glad I had cash left because I usually don’t have that much on my last day).

Ok so now I am looking at new bags. How do the airlines measure these? Do they include the wheels and the handle on top?

Does any one have any experience with Northwest and Sun Country? Northwest charges $175 for the over 62 (are you kidding me) and Sun Country charges $75.

The new bag that I am looking at fully extended according to the tag on it would be 28x19x12 ½ which would be rounded up to 60.

What do you think? (by the way we are going for 3 ½ weeks and will already have 2 bags each…)

Yes, wheels and side pockets and handles count.

Put the suitcase down. Balance a book on top of it. Measure the distance from the book to the floor. Etc.

Huge suitcases nowadays become places to sort or categorize clothing and other articles at home. They won't be taking plane trips any more.

Ignore the tag -- always. They ALL lie in the measurements on the tag. Measure the bag yourself before you buy it, and be sure to fill it with something before you do so. (I tend to go get some bed linens or towels, they are nice and bulky.) If the back or the front flap bulge out when packed, you need to count that, too.

Also note the weight. If it weighs more than 10 lbs empty it will probably go over 50 when packed.
