On Site or off?

After being on property over 30 times, we now do offsite. To get equivalent accomodations (2 bedrooms, 2 baths, living room, and kitchen) would be too much for our pocketbook onsite. Our needs dictate more room and accomodations, now. We love having a nice hot breakfast in the morning before we get to the park that's included with our offsite stay.

This does not mean we have given up on doing onsite, our needs now dictate offsite. I would consider onsite even now for a free dining offer and staying at a value (bare bones), but it would still depend on our touring plan for the time. Others in my family would prefer offsite all the time, now.

Dining is much more expensive onsite then offsite. I can still dine at the parks even if I'm offsite, but I won't be able to get a dining plan. If you want to take in character meals day after day and you like to eat more then a dining plan is a good thing and you need to be onsite to get one.

We have gotten to the point in life where doing the extra magic hours just don't thrill us. I don't want to get up that early for the early times and I don't want to be in the parks that late; so, those extra magic hours just don't thrill us. Also, I don't plan on doing a 12 or more hour day at the parks, now. In our case we don't have to do it all and we are satisfied with a slower pace that way and a more relaxed plan at Disney, now. We utilize fastpass, we don't backtrack in the parks too much, and we time the shows; so, we see what we want to see that way.

Depending where you stay off site and the time of day it has been reported here on threads that the commute can be better from offsite. You have to get in line at Disney to catch transportation (and that's both ways) and then there are intervals for transportation services (like 20 minutes a part except for rush times) and the fact that you may have to stand on the transportion is not for us. Believe me; this can get ridiculous at times. I feel better in my car away from everyone during peak times. There's a tendency to overdo with doing Disney and many get crabby at the end of the day going back to the resorts with Disney transportation; they are just too tired. I don't want to deal with other peoples issues. I believe the parking fee is around $15/day if you commute on your own; so, on a cost level that has to be factored in.

Most shuttle services offsite are a hassle. They drop you off at Epcot or the transportaion center and you still have to catch Disney transportation to get to the other parks. It's not so easy doing this if you have a stroller or if you are older. We have our own car; so, this is not an issue for us.

If you are a big Disney fan then being onsite is probably more magical especially for kids. You are immersed from beginning to end with everything Disney. The other side of this is that your child may get super charged up with over stimulation with everything Disney and that can lead to problems sleeping and so forth.

We have stayed on all levels of Disney resorts and I vote value resorts all the way. I just can't justify paying more. If the idea is to be on property then the value level gets you that perk. You can always visit the other resorts for a meal or whatever. For us the savings gets us another trip or it gets us more souvenirs or better restaurants to eat at and so forth.

As you can see there are no for sure answers either way. If you have never stayed on site then give it a shot, but be careful about the pocketbook with going deluxe.

I would recommend on-site for a first-time visitor with a family of 3. Especially since your son is only 2 and there is no charge for him for just about everything including park passes and most food. If budget if an issue you can stay at one of the value priced resorts (All Stars, Pop Century, Art of Animation) and be perfectly comfortable. Unless you really want a big condo, the cost of a rental car and parking will eat up any savings of staying at an off-site hotel room.

I have done both. If you can swing it financially, I would stay on-site! I love being right in the middle of the Magic!pixiedust:

We really enjoy staying onsite. Disney is such a magical place and they add this magic EVERYWHERE.

We love the total immersion experience.

If you can schedule your vacation during a time they are offering "free meals" that would help offset the cost of staying on-site.
There are plently of ways you can justify either staying on or off site. For my family it was just more convenient after my son was older so he could go do whatever he wanted with a friend and my wife and I could do what we wanted. Then at the end of the day I didn't have to worry about how any of us was going to get back to the room. Especially after a drink or two.

Onsite. I'll never stay any other way. We fly down, take the Magic Express and then use Disney transportation the entire time. No worry about a car and we can take advantage of extra magic hours. We also normally go during free dining.

You know the three most important words in real estate? Location, Location, Location. Stay on site. I would much rather downgrade a resort than stay offsite. To me, if you stay offsite you are vacationing in Florida. If you stay onsite, you are vacationing in WDW. The magic never ends!!

You know, this has always been my thought! When I used to go with my parents and siblings in the 80's, I remember always stopping at the cheezy gift shops. Now that we stay onsite, I can't say that I miss them! :)

We have always done onsite and LOVE it! The problem is that we have a large family (Me, DH, and 4 kids) so we have to get two rooms or a 2BR villa:scared1: which is really expensive! I love being on property, but with our family size we are trying "offsite" on our October trip. We are staying at Bonnet Creek in a 2BR for $119 per night. We just couldnt beat that price and will have lots more room.
Since it is just you, DH and one small child...I would suggest staying on site for this first trip. You could compare all levels of hotels and decide which one you want to stay at. We love deluxe best...and have stayed at all levels from value to villa.

This is it 100%. I can go to Orlando any time I want, only 2.5 hours away plus family down there. When I go to WDW, I want to GO TO WDW,and not leave.
I hate those tacky cheesy shops and areas outside WDW. Just screams TOURIST. I want total Disney immersion. I won't stay anywhere but on site. We drive so if for some reason we want dinner off site, we drive. But we very early leave.

That's a loaded question!! You will get many different opinions. It really matters what you are looking for. Tickets cost the same no matter where you stay. There are benefits to both. From what I've read, here's a quick summary......other posters please add onto the pros and cons of each:

On site:
Pros: No car rental needed with magical express and transportation, extra magic hours, Disney experience, choice of hotels

Cons: Must rent car or taxi to do anything off property, some people claim the transportation is a con, If you have more than 4 people traveling, you will sometimes need more than one room, which can be $$$$,

Off property:
Pros: Can be cheaper, many condos/homes available with more room and full kitchens, save money cooking (good for those with lots of food allergies too),

Cons: No extra magic hours, paying for parking, must rent a car,

This is just off the top of my head....
I have found that for the 3 of us, staying on property is less stressful and more convenient. BUT, we only stay on property for the Disney portion of our trip and then move on....

Another thought. Years and YEARS ago, when you used Disney transportation, you had to show room keys to prove that you stayed on property. If you did NOT have proof, you were told to leave the vehicle. Now, does anyone know if that is still done during busier times?

I have stay onsite and offsite. I have enjoy both. We I go with my son boy scouts troop to WDW we stay onsite and get two rooms. I don't have worry about transportation because we on bus. Don't have drive.

When go as family which is 5 us we stay offsite. Pros staying offsite for me. I can stay at all suite hotel and not get two rooms. Yes I know WDW offer rooms for 5 people but there no way in h@ll. I am paying those kinds prices. I can eat at buffets that does not charge arm, and leg. I can use gift cards for my meals at places that we actually like to eat. Our family likes simple food. Did I mention most important one having two tvs in the room.

Con is that have drive 10 hours by myself to WDW and back. Mom does not like to drive on the freeway. That leaves me. Okay if would be not 10 hours if I would not stop at every outlet mall and flea market.

Nope, you don't need to show a room key to get on a resort bus. You *do* have to show an ID to get into the resort itself of you're arriving by car.

Do you recomend on or off site for WDW?:confused3

It depends on what you're looking for, how much you want to pay and when you're going!

We've loved staying on Disney, for obvious reasons, but we also tend to rent a car when we go, so to stay off Disney and loose the transportation is not a biggie.

Make a list of what you are wanting in a room/resort and go from there! :)
