On site hotel AP Discount vs. Get Travel Discount

I am wondering if anyone has experience with booking an onsite hotel with an AP discount vs. going through Get Travel for Run Disney events? Disneyland said they won't release hotel prices for January until the end of July at the earliest. Get Travel has prices posted for the Star Wars Run weekend. I am just wondering which may end up cheaper? I hate to wait to book with an AP, and discover it is cheaper with Get Travel, but have them sold out. The packages through Get Travel are nonrefundable, and we all have AP's so the extra credit toward park passes is not an incentive for us. Any advice?

A few years back, the GetTravel rates during the runDisney events were very good. The only time I've been able to swing GCH was during the 2009 DL Half with GetTravel rates. However, I'm not sure if they're as good as they used to be.

That said, they have NO PROBLEM selling out the onsite hotels for these weekends so AP rates may be hard to come by.

For reference, I just looked at the GetTravel rates for the Avengers race this fall and they show $379/nt +tax for Std view at GCH. On DL site right now the price for the same room is $482 +tax. That's a ~20% discount with Get Travel which is more than your typical AP discount. I can't compare Get Travel and DL site rates for PPH and DLH because Get Travel shows standard room rates and only view rooms are available on Disney site.

The GetTravel rates for the Star Wars race are higher than the Avengers ones, but the base room rates may be higher too (obviously we don't know since you can't book those dates thru Disney yet)....

My only comparison was last summer when I got a 40% discount on a GCH standard room as part of the D23 Expo. The AP discount was minimal - like 15% - barely above the AAA rate 10% discount.

In general I would say the event discounts will be more than the AP discount. But that may flip flop during offseason.

There should be no penalty for reserving and then canceling a room. I would book it both ways and then when you see how the discounts play out cancel the reservation with the lowest discount.

OP is correct that the runDisney affiliated booking packages through GET Travel are non-refundable so they don't really have this option, unfortunately.

Ooops, I did not read the OP carefully enough.

Doesn't the SW race have a special room rate at the DLR hotels? I am pretty sure the Tink half marathon does. I would expect it would be more than 20%.

Yes. The way you get those rates is through the travel providers like GetTravel. You can't book them directly through the hotel. So all that is the genesis of the OPs question :)

FWIW, for the D23 Expo there was a link on the D23 website or on the confirmation email I got for the Expo registration. So there was no dealing with another company. Just direct to Disney. I kind of assumed all Disney events would be similar. Guess not.

I believe the Get Travel package that is non refundable is the the Early Bird package, which includes choice of Disney hotel, registration, 3 day park hopper Disney Theme Park ticket and the Wookiee Welcome pre-race party. Since the OP is a passholder, I don't think they would need tickets unless they were blocked out that weekend. If they do need tickets, they can book both the tickets and a room separately through Get Travel and the hotel reservations are then able to be changed or cancelled. Last year, I had a reservation through Get Travel at the GCH for the Tinkerbell weekend, and we had some unexpected medical expenses, so I had to cancel my room at the GCH and stay at a much cheaper hotel. I was charged a $25 cancellation fee, which sucked, but what can you do?

Side note: I am not impressed at the discount rates for the Disney hotels through Get Travel. $350 a night for PP plus parking doesn't seem like that great of a discounted rate.
