Will be traveling for the first time with a laptop. I was wondering if my laptop case is considered my one carry-on or am I allowed my backpack + my laptop.

The laptop bag, assuming it is not tremendously large, is allowed in addition to your backpack.

As a guideline, the "personal item" should be no more than a third the volume of the carry on maximum.

For example if the carryon maximum is 9 x 14 x 22 (typical) something 3 x 14 x 22 (attache case) will probably pass as your personal item, so should something about 9 x 5 x 22 (small duffle), or 9 x 14 x 7 (fat purse),

Yes, as long as neither case is huge no one will question you. I travel with a canvas bag and my rolling computer case with no problems.

On USAir, your "personal item" must be no more than 36" (the 3 measurements added up). A regular laptop case would be smaller than that. A carryon bag can be no bigger than 10 x 16 x 24. For other airlines, check their website.
