On-line check in question

We've never bothered to do on-line before as we always pre-book our seats well in advance and are generally at the airport early anyway. We are off to New York on Tuesday but as we only booked a few weeks ago we couldnt access the seating plan and it says seats will be allocated at check in Is it better to check in on-line the day before and if so do you choose your seats or are they randomly given to you

If you are flying with Virgin you can choose your own seats when you do online check-in.
