I just put down new hardwood floors thru out the first floor of my home and I was wondering if I could get some help with the best Budget friendly way to keep them clean? Also to keep my furniture from sliding around especially my recliner? Kitchen chairs from marking the floors? Did you place a carpet down over your hardwoods?

Any help would be appreciated since this is my first home with hardwood floors and I'm at a lost of what product works the best.

Thanks

We use rubber furniture pads with ours. Depends on your furniture, some have little metal caps you can replace with rubber ones, or there are rubber discs you can just place under them. We got ours at Homedepot, they have a whole section of furniture accessories that has stuff like this.

You can use a rug, but you need to put a non-slip rug pad under it, otherwise the entire rug will move.

Ace and other hardware stores sell felt pads to put on furniture to prevent sliding and prevent damage to the floor.

I Install and re finish for a living. I'm assuming that you put down 3/4 inch thick pre finished wood floors. If you know the name of the manufacturer, I'd contact them to see what they recommend. I usually recommend 1 cup of white vinegar to 1 gallon of lukewarm water. Do not over saturate floors. Over time, the solution gets between the boards and warps/cups the boards. Buy a dust mop. Use felt pads that stick to chairs.

We use Bona to clean our hardwood floors. It was recommended by the flooring installer. We had a housecleaner suggest Method hardwood floor cleaner and polisher, but we thought it left a residue after a few times using it. So we went back to Bona. Now we alternate between the two because the Method has a nice almond scent. We use the sticky backed felt pads under all the furniture that touches the wood floor.

As an aside to this thread, a family member recently had water damage that is going to result in the 100 year old wood flooring being replaced due to buckling. Anyone have recommendations on more recent wood flooring that they have been happy with?

We put the little felt pads under all our furniture, works great but after a few years we did have to replace a few. As far as cleaning, we use a dustmop or our Dyson on the hard floor setting and about once every 3 months, I have the cleaning lady go over it with just a damp mop, no chemicals at all. We do have some Murphy's Oil Hardwood Cleaning stuff for when the puppy misses her pad and wets the floor but we try not to use it very often. Seems to damage the surface after a while. I've been known to get my portable clothes steamer out and just steam where she wets.

OK, I'm going to assume you do not have hard wood in your kitchen, every 3 months damp cleaning would not work for us! I do use the Bona on my kitchen frequently, and have been happy with the results.

I use Bona Floor hardwood floor cleaner mostly but have been known to break out the vinegar and water if the floor is extra dirty.

I put felt pads under all furniture that has feet and my husband's recliner I found a small rug that matches the extra large throw rug I got for the living room floor. That stops his recliner from moving and scratching up the floor.

For some reason my recliner doesn't scratch the floor or move around alot - maybe it already has some sort of pad on it. I also very seldom use the reclining feature - I'm not a fan of those so maybe that's why.

We have hardwood all through the first floor including the kitchen.

I have the bissell pet hard floor cleaner vacuum, and I use a shark steam mop on my hardwood.

We got our floors thru an offer at Costco. They are 3/4" solid oak hardwood, from Shaw. I was happy with Shaw, made in USA. The Costco was a great deal, and even came with a 10% Costco card rebate (we put down 1000+ sq. ft), so that was around $700. (then DD needed tires and that killed more than 1/2 of that , oh well). It was about $7 sq ft installed, and they moved the furniture around for free.

i got the matching Timbermate putty stuff for scratches, plus one of those pens. I use either, depending on scratch, not that we have had many scratches (almost 2 years and now we have 3 dogs).

For furniture, I really went for it on the kitchen chairs, as they are the worst for heavy usage here and moving about. I bought the things called "Furniture Feet". They come in many sizes and are round. (Limbridge, Melonboat are other brands I used, same thing but square and rectanglular, those worked better for my chairs) I used Amazon. I do not care if they look a little bit weird. Other items I used felt, for things that are more rarely moved.

I use dust mop often, vacuum sometimes, mop rarely with Bona.

Nope, tile in my kitchen, bathrooms and laundry room. Hardwood in my family room and dining room. Bedrooms are carpeted.

I have felt pads on the feet of all my furniture. The guy that installed ours recommended only using water and a little vinegar to clean them. He said other cleaners will build up over time and then that makes refinishing them a bear because it gums up the sanders.
