You can't use them until the plane is over 10,000 feet. Don't worry, though, the FA will come on with an announcement when it is safe to turn on the electricial devices and when you have to shut them down for landing.

This is probably a given to you, but definatly use headphones. I would suggest getting a splitter too, they come in handy when 2 people want to listen.

And make it a pair of isolation or noise canceling headphones. Planes are very noise. Regular earbuds don't do so well if you ask me.
