On a more positive note: which organizations do you

plan to donate to (food, money, whatever) for the Delta area disaster?
Which do you think deserve more attention?

Of course everyone always thinks of the American Red Cross. And I don't want to sound like I am slamming them in any way. I think the work they do is terrific.
But I think I will donate to the Salvation Army and humane societies.
I am organizing a Crime Prevention and safety Fair for October in our subdivision. I plan to includea drive for food, toy or clothing in conjunction. By then I will know how to best get money and supplies to where it is needed for LA, MS & AL survivors.

We will donate through our school, which will in turn give our donations to Catholic Charities, which is the name of an organization that will distribute to the most needy... it is not a charity FOR Catholics.

We have quite a few evacuees coming here (some already here) so our church and all other churches in town are partnering together to care for them. So, we are donating supplies and time to those individuals. They are still putting together a comprehensive list of needs, but I know they will need people to come and do shift work around the clock, provide activities for the children, help with counseling and contacting help for them, etc etc. Plus they need basic things - blankets, blow up mattresses, sheets, clothing, toothpaste, etc. We are on "standby" to hear the largest needs of that and then we will do something.

"Leftover" supplies will be sent to other persons in need.

I made a $$$ donation to the Red Cross. Although I do not have any problem with anyone sending anything, I like the philosophy of the RC.

On NPR yesterday, the head of the American RC stated that $$ does them the most good because:

1.) $$ are easier to move than stuff
2.) The RC always buys what they need as close to the disaster site as possible in an attempt to help out the local economy. So rather than trucking trailer loads full of stuff across that country (although, once again, I have NO problem with those that take that route), they will spend $$ in MS & LA. I had not even thought of that, & it kinda' made sense to me.

I donated the only way I could - through the Red Cross website. I am too far away to do anything else at this point, although I am as frustrated as everyone that babies are dying of dehydration and people are being beaten and raped. I wish there was more that I could do. :guilty:

I have already given to the Red Cross and Sunday will give to the Episcopal Bishops Relief Fund. (small but pretty efficent) I also plan to give some additonal to either the Red Cross or Salvation Army.

I have met Marty Evans and I trust her.... I figure they will spend every penny they get in and then some

See my "stuff" post. I will be glad to give "stuff" to help a family get back on thier feet, but now is not the time for that.. now is the time for CASH.

I like donating, but I WANT to go hand those people water, battery fans, food, clothes, and hug them. Then get them in my car and get them outta there! So frustrating!!! :grouphug:

I'm donating to the Red Cross, the Mennonite Disaster Service (They have already arrived in Mississippi and start cleaning up on Saturday) and the Humane Society. I wish I could do more...

I've already given to the Red Cross, but I'll also be donating, and hopefully involved in a more hands on way eventually, through my local YMCA, which has close ties to the New Orleans Y. I'm also a trustee of a private charitable foundation. We distribute contributions at year end, based on earned income. I'll be recommending that we channel most of the funds this year to hurricane relief organizations, so I'll be doing research and looking for opportunities that I feel will make the most impact.
