Last week we stayed a few nights of our visit at Coronado Springs. We were looking around the resort, walking around the gift shop and checking out the restaurants. Down by the area where they prepare baked goods at Pepper Market there is a glass window in the hallway that you can see them icing cakes and such. Well, I was standing there looking in and one of the ladies was cutting and placing what looked like sponge cake from a large pan to individual plates. Well, I could not believe my eyes. After she emptied the tray, she took her fingers and scraped the bottom of the pan to scoop up what was left in the pan and ate if off her fingers and licked them!! She then proceeded to continue working with the slices she had just cut!! I had hoped to enjoy some of the cakes there, but after that I could not bring myself to order any desserts. I wish I had said something, but I did not and now I regret it. I know lots goes on in restaurants that we do not know about, but seeing it made me sick! So much for wearing those plastic gloves! What good do they do when you're licking on them!

Gross!!!! But I gotta say, I think things like that go on at food establishments across the country EVERY day. Things worse than that. I just try not to think about it. I wouldn't avoid the Pepper Market because of it unless, like you, I saw it in person.

You never really know what's going on with your food unless you're making it yourself.

If you only know how much goes on behind the scenes you would never eat outside your own kitchen.

Just to share one with you, when my wife was a waitress one of the prep cooks would wipe down counters (where customers had just eaten) and then clean his knife with the same towel. The knife that he used to prep the vegetables.

No matter how much she yelled at him he did not get it.

She got free lunch there, but always brought her own from home.

 That is definitely not something you want to see at a restaurant. But I would be lying if I said that the licking of fingers never happened in my kitchen at home. :rolleyes1 Of course not before touching other people's food. :thumbsup2

Reminds me of a favorite quote of Julia Child: "It's so beautifully arranged on a plate -- you know someone's fingers have been all over it."

Poor lady...she should know plastic gloves are a hotbed for bacteria.

LOL - you should have actually ran to buy one. If the cakes were sooooooo good that the baker forgot she was on display to the world and couldn't help but sample the cakes, they must have been *that* darn good. :rotfl:

Ugh when I worked at Friday's I saw this all the time. Waiters sticking their fingers in food to see if they're hot enough, then licking them... warming up the food...and doing it all over again.

I'm a big fan of 'What I don't know won't kill me'. I wouldn't have eaten them that day either. But if I waited a few days, I'd just gladly like to think that they didn't touch this batch. :)

the kid behind the counter at sea world, 7 or 8 years ago, was picking his nose and when he went to get peoples drinks he would pick up two empty cups at a time with one hand which means you have to put your thumb and index finger INSIDE each cup and squeeze to pick them up. i sat and watched this for a time and then passed on my drink.

I know lots of gross things go on behind the scenes, but just seeing it made me unable to get beyond the thought! I agree, with the viewing window being there, what in the world would she have done if it weren't! Actually, you would think she would be aware I was standing there watching her.

I am definitely with you there. If I had seen it, I do not thing I can eat all day. I would not be able to get it out of my mind.

My father in law has the habit of licking his fingers every time he touches anything during any meal. I find that disgusting and would usually try to make sure that he sits down at the table and tell him that he is our guest and he can just relax. I try to make sure that he does not help with dinner or set the table etc. So on occasion, he decides to pour our drinks. He set down whatever he is eating and then proceeds to lick his fingers and pick up my glass....no he does not pick it up by the side, he reaches and grabs the top where I would drink from.:scared: Needless to say, I did not drink during my entire meal. My husband laughs when I complain to him about it. :sad2: Believe me, I am gagging just thinking about it.

Very disturbing, I would rather not know what goes on behind the scenes. Somethings we are better off not knowing about. :cool1::banana:

I have less (not a lot less..) of a problem dealing with her finger licks; I am horrified by employees who don't wash their hands after using the toilet or toching private areas on their bodies, or employees who blow their noses or sneeze into a tissue and proceed to work on food. UGH. Obviously the frosting was good! She liked it. I'd be willing to bet many, many bakers do the same thing. Have you ever watched FoodTV Network and how Paula Deen licks the spoon and puts it right back in the pot? Or, on Ace of Cakes, the workers are frosting cakes and their long hair is flying all over the place. eeeooowww. You'd be amazed.

Ditto! I'm sure we've all unknowingly eaten some gross stuff in our lives. It's gross to witness that, but who knows what goes on behind the scenes at all the places we eat.

If we knew half the stuff that went on we would never eat out, I agree that is gross but happens in the top resturants in the world, the chef will taste the food and put the spoon back in the pot etc.... the things we don't know is better. I was watching a tv show on discovery channel and it was talking about things we don't know, like a person on average eats 4 spiders/bugs a year, they crawl into your mouth while you are sleeping with your mouth open.:scared1:
