hehehe

So due to my EXTREMELY generous family...I had $200 worth of Target gift cards burning a hole in my purse...so I decided to get the iPod shuffle (to use mainly for working out.) (yep - bought the shuffle and toilet bowl cleaner! heheh)

I'm TRYING to set it up now...iTunes is TOTALLY foreign to me...but I have a question..if I rip a CD to my shuffle..what is the best format to use? mp3 or aac? or, rather, what does it mean when it says "Importing using..." and then I choose from AAC/MP3/WAV...etc... which is best?

Thanks!

My DD got the iPod shuffle also. I have the songs saved as MP3. When you plug is into the USB port, the songs automatically transfer.

HTH!

I love how everyone says itunes does it all 'automatically'....

iTunes will be the death of me! Heck, if my mom can figure this out...so can I!

Well, um, I don't know what everyone else says, but ours *did* transfer automatically.

If that doesn't work for you, maybe try reading the manual or contacting Customer Service.

Sorry, was just trying to help!

no no - I'm sure it does...I'm still setting up iTunes...i'm new to iPod...my other mp3 player had software that, IMO, was much more intuitive then iTunes.

I use iTunes to manage the iPod and buy from the iTunes Music Store and that's it. I'm pretty sure about this... if you rip with iTunes, it's saved as an .aac file. Yeah, yeah, it's better than .mp3, but no one else uses it (Apple is powerful, but they could be creating a Betamax problem). If iPod is the only portable player you have and you don't have other mp3 compatible players (many DVD players play mp3s) you can use aac, but why? The iPods play mp3s.

To add existing mp3s to your iTunes library use file, add folder (I think that's the right description). It will seek and add them to the library.

I'd also recommend shutting off the "synch on connect". What a painful default.

I use RealPlayer and Windows Media to rip. Then pull them into iTunes to move to the iPod.

so...question...
I "added" folders that contain music to this "library" in iTunes. (DH has a TON of music on this computer)

now...I don't have these 1100+ files in my iTunes library AND on our harddrive...meaning...in 2 places? (taking up space?)

so - now - I'm creating a playlist called "workout" and on it i will put all my workout music...then I just copy THAT playlist to the shuffle?

i'm gettin' there...heheh

found ipodlounge.com to be very helpful

No, it's not taking up that space again. Think of it as just a view. iTunes just knows about them now. My problem was so many songs imported to iTunes without artist and album information. These were old mp3s I ripped in the days before the ripper would gather CD/song information. I spent a lot of time looking in the unknown group to get the attributes set correctly.

Once the iPod is connected you should be able to drag and drop the playlist up to it.

I am a computer / technology moron, and I was able to set up and download to my iPod. You can do it! :cheer2:

Denae

figured it out!

3.5 hours and the cute little bugger is charged up and half full of music! (need more "workout tunes!" heheheh)

thanks all! Ya know - once I figured it out...it was pretty simple.

My DD got the Shuffle for Christmas and I spent about 2 hours on Christmas Day trying to figure out the itunes thing. We finally got it to work but I'm not sure how.

The directions that come with it are terrible!
