OMG 405 to be closed in July!

Is this the only weekend where there will be closures? We are traveling from DL to Monetery 7/30 to 8/1. If there are more closures, is there a schedule?

Thanks

This is the only scheduled closure of this type. There will be periodic lane closures and there may need to be an additional closure of this type later in the project but from what I've heard they are looking closely at this one to determine what may need to be done next.

It wont be the weekend you mentioned.

There is no "may" about it. This weekend closure is for preliminary work only. There will be more closures in the future for actual construction of the carpool lane. No dates have been announced.

I own an outside baby equipment and stroller rental company- and these are my alternates
5 to the 210 east
210 to the 605
605 the 5 - you will have about 10 mile to go

405 closure will hurt but I live in Sherman Oaks and I deal with the screwy schedule 7 days a week for the last two years

The Surfliner train is quite nice. I took it from San Diego to Anaheim, so it sounds like it's the opposite way, but I quite liked it. And I'd rather be stuck 4 hours on a train where I can get up, use the bathroom, get some food, etc...than on a highway....

Then just catch a cab from the Angels Stadium station (a few years ago it was $13 by meter to DLH) and you're there!
Sounds like the OP is set on not taking the train, but for anyone else I'd highly recommend the Pacific Surfliner south from Santa Barbara. That first hour from SB to Ventura is postcard scenic. California guidebook scenic. Make sure you try to get a window on the ocean side of the train to get the best view.

Also, as far as bags, I got on at Goleta, the stop prior to SB, and it's pretty much just take your bags with you since that's an unattended station. No muss, no fuss. Here's the Amtrak California site, btw: http://www.amtrakcalifornia.com.

There will be lane closures there MAY be another total freeway closure. The reason for the closure is the bridge construction. I do agree that this area will be subject to periodic lane closures for a number of months.

reading all of this is making me seriously nervous about our trip. :/ i really hope our drive doesnt end up being 10 hours long. that would NOT be fun...

At least it'll be one way only... and i'll have DLR to look forward to. But still. Being stuck in a car with a billion other cars all day is not a good start of a trip. :bored:

I expect locals to underestimate the impact and hit the roads on their favorite alternate route. They all think they have the inside scoop. There is no easy way around this one. It amazes me how many people around here in SoCal don't seem to know about this yet.
I think the word is starting to get out to the locals more and more. The electronic freeway signs started to announce the freeway closure two weekends ago. The signs have only been showing this warning on the weekends, but I imagine that will step up as we get closer. And I'm sure the local media will hype up "carmageddon" increasingly over the next week. At work, there was a company-wide email sent last week about it, so it's been the talk in the office. I have two co-workers who work on the Westside where this section of the 405 is closed and they plan to stay in and go nowhere that weekend lol.

I live in Sherman Oaks too! Pretty much right where the 101 and 405 meet. I'm not looking forward to this weekend at all. I have to assume our local surface streets will be packed with vehicles having to detour as this is the northern end of the 405 closure.

Ok seriously worried. First I've no clue about any road in Cali and where they lead to! I'll be arriving in LAX on 16th. Staying in Manhattan beach area but wanted to do Universal on the 17th. Does that put me right in the middle of the madness? Any assistance, advice will be most appreciated!
TinkerKat, unfortunately, I think Universal visitors like yourself will be *most affected* by this freeway closure, more so than Disneyland visitors. Why? Universal is along the 101 Fwy, which is the closest N-to-S freeway alternate to the closed section of the 405. This closure/detour map (.pdf file) shows the section of the 405 that will be closed and you'll see that the 101 is indicated as the primary detour. Universal Studios is just north of where it says "West Hollywood" on the map. Do you have flexibility in your schedule for an alternate day for Universal? Disneyland (or some other activity) on the 17th would be easier to get to from Manhattan Beach than Universal. It's something to think about.

Any idea on how much time I should plan for if I want to get from Santa Monica to LAX on Sun. 17th for a 10 p.m. flight? Is there a better route to take to try to avoid some of the chaos, or will it all be this way?

Will these closures (405 and the road word on I-5) be a effecting the drive from Anaheim to San Diego? We leave DL and drive to SD on the 15th. Any suggestions?

You might be lucky. Santa Monica is where the 405 re-opens at the southern end of the closure. If you have a smartphone, you can check Google Maps traffic or Sigalert.com and monitor the conditions in the afternoon. You may not run into too much craziness, but I don't really know. As an alternate route, you can take Lincoln Blvd (also marked in parts as SR 1 Pacific Coast Highway) all the way from Santa Monica to LAX. In normal traffic, I've done this drive (Lincoln Blvd.) in about 20-25 minutes depending on how many lights I hit. To be safe--in case traffic is really horrendous--give yourself an hour to make the drive. Any other locals think this sounds about right?

AustinTink, you're much luckier. The section of the 405 that is closing is far away to the north and west of Disneyland. Your drive to San Diego won't be affected by this construction. BUT, the 15th is a Friday and San Diego is a popular weekend destination for Angelenos. The drive on the I-5 South is notorious for congestion on both Fridays and Saturdays. Just bring lots of patience for your trip. If you can leave early in the day on the 15th, that would be my one recommendation. Good luck with the rest of your trip planning! :goodvibes
