I'm considering buying interior Olympic One paint in Flat/Matte...

Let me first say that I despise Behr paint. I think it's total crap and incredibly watery with poor coverage. I like Valspar, Benjamin Moore, and Sherwin Williams (I'm only speaking about the top tiers of each line, not the cheapest options). So, if you love Behr paint, I probably don't want your opinion. LOL

So...is Olympic One paint pretty good for the price? We'll be painting our entire main level so I would prefer to not have to spend $$$ if the Olympic will do the job fairly well. But, if it is total crap I will fork over the money to get a decent product. What have been your experiences with Olympic One paint? Should I just stick with what I already know I like, or attempt to save a few bucks?

I do subscribe to Consumer Reports but in the past when they have rated Behr #1 I couldn't have disagreed more so I don't care what their ratings are on paint anymore.

I'm with you there. I don't understand why anyone would call Behr paint even slightly ok. It's like water. Dh & I are very particular with good quality paint. We love Sherwin Williams & can do Benjamin Moore as choice #2 but mostly stick to SW.
Last summer we decided to paint 2 bedrooms and it ended up costing almost $1k for paint, roller covers, tape, etc. :scared1:
Sorry I've never used Olympic so I can't help you there but loved your Behr comment & couldn't resist. :thumbsup2
Honestly, we're afraid to try anything else. My BIL (dh's bro) is a professional painter and likes Fineran & Haley but we tried it years ago when BIL was helping us paint and dh wasn't happy with it. I had just had ds by c-section so I wasn't painting with them. It looked nice but I don't know how it "felt" going on. After that, we have agreed to suck it up & pay for SW from now on. Good luck!

We have used Olympic throughout our house and on multiple occasions. I like it. I do not like Benjamin Moore at all. I find it watery and the coverage terrible. We have been putting up samples in the kitchen and dd's bedroom and only Benjamin Moore shows every brush stroke (again sampling color so that is why we are using brushes).

Haha, thanks for your opinion! I think you are the only other person I've ever heard say they also hate Behr paint! I've never been able to convince people to not use Behr...they think it's wonderful. To me, it's like painting with milk. LOL

I think I'm just going to stick with what I already know I love. SW is actually really inexpensive because they have 30% and 40% off sales all the time. :) Valspar is my favorite budget paint...it's so thick, I love it!

Sherwin Williams Duration is absolutely the way to go for the interior house. Benjamin Moore would be number 2.

Yes, coverage is important, and SWD will at times, depending on what it's covering, cover in one coat. But folks forget about appearance, FEEL and washabilty. You can tell by the texture of the paint if it is good paint and if you can actually wipe it to get fingerprints off. Good paint will also last longer and good paint will not get that "chalky" dusty look in the darker colors that the lower grade paints will.

Spend a little more and you will save in the long run.

Yes! We got it when it was 30% off.

Dh painted the exterior when ds16 was 1.5. Except for a little bit of trim paint cracking around the screened back porch, overall it still looks good. We'd like to do the exterior again so I'll look for 40% off.

Dh is also particular about using good brushes. They have to be Purdy or he gets aggravated. He takes good care of them and they last a long time so it's worth spending extra for.

I love Benjamin Moore colors, but prefer Valspar paint. It goes on VERY nice and smooth. We recently painted a soft taupe over a pumpkin orange and only needed two coats :thumbsup2

I've had very good luck with Behr, so I'm one whose opinion doesn't matter.

I have a good friend that is in the paint business, and he said that coverage differs depending on what you paint with, and what you are painting over. Covering flat paint with semi-gloss, for instance, will require more paint than covering semi-gloss with semi-gloss.

I'm in my second new house that was painted with Sherwin Williams paint, and it is total crap! The walls feel like they were painted with sidewalk chalk. I'll never buy Sherwin Williams paint, regardless the price.

I LOVE SW paint and would love to find a cheaper paint. Like others have stated, I just wait for their sales. We are going to put the house on the market next spring and part of me says use a cheap paint, but I just cant bring myself to do it. I'll just wait for a sale.

How much cheaper is Valspar?

Have you ever heard of Clark & Kensington paint? Me neither :upsidedow, but I just read a review about it in Consumer Reports and thought I'd have to remember the name:

The highest scoring of all 65 paints tested, the Clark+Kensington satin paint was great at hiding, leaving a smooth finish that resisted stains and scrubbing with little change in gloss after cleaning. It was also better than most at resisting fading, making it ideal for sunny rooms, and resisting sticking, a plus for windows. You can skip priming. You'll find this paint at most Ace Hardware stores.

Valspar is $30/gal I think for their nicest paint so not much cheaper than SW if you buy during their sales.

We had our house painted in SW Duration last spring and it looks amazing. That stuff is like liquid caulk it's so thick! Well worth the price in my opinion. Maybe I'll try it in the interior paint...though I've heard Duration has a learning curve since it is so thick.

I have heard of Clark & Kensington, it is Ace Hardware's line. I'm not really interested in trying it personally.

I am not sure about Olympic One but we were happy with Olympic Premium when we repainted most of upstairs in 2010. Now we are painting our kitchen with Olympic Premium Kitchen and Bath semi gloss and are happy with results so far. One coat did the ceiling but it looks like it will need 2 coats for the walls. New sheetrock with Kiltz sealer.

For info the Lowes web site lists the 4-qt can for the 1-qt price and they price matched their site which saved us $12 per gal.
