I need help. My dd just came home from school (5th grade) and her assignment tonight is to watch the olympic games opening tonight.

Long story short, we don't have cable. Our digital cable company decided to stop offering their services on July 1st. Our phone company paired up with Dish TV instead. We have been in shock and have not decided to get Dish TV yet. For the past month, we have been watching all our disney DVDS. Imagine that! I honestly haven't missed the cable TV.

Anyway, back to my problem. My dd raised her hand and asked what to do if you didn't have tv. The teacher said that her grade might suffer if she found info from another source. She didn't know.

So, is the opening games on tonight? What time? What channel? Eastern time. Can we find info on the internet?

I don't know what to do.

TIA

The opening ceremony is being shown tomorrow evening (Friday) on NBC. You can probably look it up on-line to get specifics. Try NBC.com. You can watch lots of network shows on-line these days. I don't know if the Olympics will be shown on-line, but you can check NBCs website. I don't think your daughter should get a lower grade for not having access to TV. That doesn't seem fair!

I believe the opening ceremony is tomorrow night. I know NBC is planning on broadcasting quite a bit of coverage on nbc.com so you might check there.

It seems an awful lot like the teacher is punishing your daughter (and you) for not having cable TV. That is not fair. I might talk to the principal if her grade is truly affected by this.

Thanks for your replies. Still looking for options. I see that the opening ceremony is tomorrow.

We started back to school on Monday. And I hate it already.

My dd needs to know basic info.

I don't know what she could watch tonight since the opening ceremony is tomorrow night? I would look on the internet though. Just do a search. I bet you can find lots of broadcasts of various things. Some people basically watch "tv" on their computers now.

I hate to say it but it sounds like you have a lazy teacher. One she doesn't know when the Olympics start. Two if she wants them to learn about the olympics or China why didn't she have them find a book to read. Our public library has children's books on both.

My dh and I don't allow are children to watch tv on school nights so I would have an issue with this assignment for that reason.

If you have an email address for the teacher I would email her and let her know why your dd couldn't complete the assignment. You could also copy the principal but its early in the year. How much trouble do you want to stir up?

Do you get any channels without cable? (We don't.) If so, you may still get the Olympics. It's being broadcast on NBC. The Opening Ceremony is tomorrow (8/8/08).

If you can't watch the Olympics, perhaps your DD could get the necessary info. from the internet. Here's a link to the official website for the 2008 Olympics: http://en.beijing2008.cn/

Here's the link to the NBC website for the 2008 Olympics (with videos): http://www.nbcolympics.com/.

I hope this helps!

I think it is nuts that TV is a requirement for homework. If you find another source for the info she needs for her assignment fine. But I think I would still write the teacher a note or call her and say we don't have access to TV channels right now. So if there will be any future assingments requiring TV watching my daughter will need an alternative assignment.

There were some soccer games on the past couple of days USA played Japan earlier this evening and won (mens) abut the "offical" opening isn't until tomorrow then it will be on NBC so everyone can watch it! Maybe the teacher was just joking a little.
