Old Vic Theater in London - how dressed up for a play?

I am batting around the thought of having a layover in London for a return trip home from Europe. I will be with my adult daughter, and I know she would really enjoy seeing one of her favorite actors in a play at the Old Vic, but I am not sure what the dress code would be.

We are hopefully  traveling light, and I would prefer not to pack formal gowns if I don't have to, but I also don't wish to show up in jeans if the dress code is supposed to be formal.

I looked on the website, but I didn't see anything relating to the dress code.

Has anyone been that could shed some light? If it helps, we would be going to the evening show, not the matinee.

Thanks!

I think you could get away with a little black dress. I have one that I can wear anywhere. It hits just below the knee and has a belt with a little sparkle.

Eta I just googled to be sure and their blog has a cute article about what to wear. It sounds like they aren't too strict. I've been to live theatre and most people like to dress nice for an evening show. Not formal but business casual or a step up from that.

Here's the link http://www.atgtickets.com/blog/what-to-wear-to-the-theatre/

Most people going to the theatre in London nowadays wear smart casual clothes, an LBD or something similar would be perfect. You will probably see a few people wearing jeans etc.

Thank you! The picture in Lizabu's link was how I was thinking we would have to dress, but if a summery dress will work too, then that will be much easier to lug around Europe!

I was in London over Christmas/NY holiday with my family (young adult children). We attended Phantom at Her Majesty's theater and the dress was eclectic. There were people very dressed up and people in jeans. We had tried to travel light which is not easy for winter so we did not bring a "fancy" outfit but DD and myself wore black jeans, dress boots and nice tops with our nice coats. DH and DS wore dark casual pants with a nice top. We did not feel out of place. It really is what you want to make of the experience and perhaps where you plan to dine.

I tend to wear jeans and a top when I go to the theatre but we usually spend the day in London before the show. Most theatres are very laid back in what to wear. I think its also depends on whether its a Matinee or evening performance.
