Old Key West

I am hoping to get some information about Old Key West. We have stayed at the Fort Wilderness cabins in the past. I did not know that Old Key West was a place that you could stay at if you were not a member of the Disney Timeshare. What do we have to do to stay there? Can you just book a reservation from central reservations? I have a lot of questions and I was referred to this board by a friend. Any information would be helpful. We are planning a summer trip.

You can book OKW through Disney just as you book every other Disney resort. Doing so, you will have the same maid service and cancellation policies as when staying at a Disney resort (like Ft. Wilderness). Some people also arrange with individual members to "rent" a stay through them. These are private transactions and folks establish their own rules regarding cancellation, etc. There is also a more limited housekeeping schedule but you can purchase additional cleanings.

That said -- OKW is a beautiful resort. To really appreciate it, you should stay in a one-bedroom or larger if possible. The studios are also very nice but the bigger units are really something special. Have you looked at the descriptions on www.disneyworld.com and www.disneyvacationclub.com ? Thanks for your prompt reply! I will follow your links. We have not been to Disneyworld for quite a few years and we are very excited about planning a trip. Does a 1 bedroom have bedding enough for 3 people? Thanks.

A one bedroom would sleep 4 people. A king sized bed in the master bedroom and a pullout queen sleeper in the living room.

You will also have a washer and dryer and a jacuzi tub in the bath room. Both are big upgrades over the Fort wilderness cabins. Besides the fact that you will have double the space!!

A 1BR at OKW also has a full kitchen with all full size appliances, a nice big great room(combo living room/dining room), a lovely deck off the back.

Sigh... I can picture myself there now....

You will love OKW. It is quiet and spacious and lovely. The i bedroom units are all very homey and spacious. When we stay there we seem to meet as many renters as members.
By all means try it. You may find that after staying at OKW you never want to go back to a regualr hotel room.

Besides the 'rooms' being more spacious the resort is close to DTD and PI. There are resort activities every day (some have a fee). And the entire resort is lovely.
Try it you'll love it!! I'm getting packed now for my trip 'home' to OKW next week!

Keep checking back for discounts. They will probably be available as you get closer to your vacation date. Check with "MOusesavers" and on this site. You can then rebook with the discount rate.

Don't know about renting points. We don't rent ours. But it might save you money.

You can use Disney transportation, but OKW is great with your own car because you can park by your door.

Rumor has it that the main pool will be closed some time this fall for installation of a slide. But that is definitely not confirmed -- ask when you reserve. There are several pools however.

It has the feel of an "exclusive" resort, because it is isolated from the routine Disney park-hounds. Lots of elbow room. The best!! but I'm biased as you can tell.

These are exactly the things we missed when we stayed at the cabins last may. We loved the cabins and I can't imagine a kid (of any age) not thinking the murphy beds were cool, but the double 'master' bed was a bit cramped for us and having the bunk beds in the bedroom might put a damper on conceiving any new souviniers.

We decided the 'big' difference in the two accomodations is that 4 adults would work in an OKW room, but the cabins were much better attuned toward a family with 2 adults and the rest kids.

Just a note that even if the main pool is closed for construction when you are there, (supposedly planned for October and November), there are three other smaller community pools throughout the resort. These each include a hot tub and playground area as well as a grill.

The Old Turtle Pond pool is almost comparable to the main pool. The rumor also is that if the main pool is closed, boats will be provided to the new SSR pool.

I had a co-woker that thought the same thing. Anyway, OKW is a great place to stay. You will have plenty of room for 3 people. If you are going in the summer, the pool construction will probably not be started so it won't be a problem for you. If you get an annual pass there is probably a discount that you can get. I am not sure about this, thee may be more information over on the resort board. Have fun planning!

Having also stayed in the FW Cabins and OKW, just wanted to let you know that for us, those 2 are our favorite places. We stayed in the Cabins (actually, then they were trailer homes) back in the late 80's, on our first 3 trips. For some reason, we then tried many different hotels until we discovered OKW 2 years ago. Units there are MUCH larger, but that same homey, laid back feel. I think if you love one, you'll love the other. Just my experience.
