Old Computer Monitor.What to do with it?

I just purchased a new monitor. I would like to donate the old monitor but I am not sure if anyone will want it. Is it worth anything at all or should I just toss it out with the next trash pickup? I hate to dump anything that others could use.

We donated ours to a school for mentally challenged.

It is my understanding that monitors cannot be placed in the trash. It is considered toxic to the environment. My school had a good number of old monitors and we had to call a company that recycles articles like monitors, televisions. etc. to remove them for us.

Old monitors, in fact any old tech equipment like computers, cell phones, tvs, cordless phones, etc. should not be put in the trash. Many contain large amounts of lead, mercury and other toxic substances. There are companies that recycle these items. Look in the phone book or call your local municipality to find a recycler in your area. There may also be specific collection sites/dates in your town when you can bring these items in.

We simply donated ours to Good Will at one of their drop off centers.

FYI...used computer equipment MUST be disposed of by a licensed hazardous waste contractor. The serial number can be traced to you later if disposed of improperly - make sure you get a receipt listing the SN and keep it!

Yup, especially in the Northeast, they've been tracking down the original owners of abandoned TVs and computer monitors. They've got heavy metals in them... very bad for the environment. Our town has a day once a year when you can bring them to a central collection point. Not all towns can afford that though.
