OKW Studio Questions

I'll be staying in a studio at OKW in January with my cousin, her husband and 9 month old daughter and was wondering about a few things beforehand.

1.) Are there enough paper plates and bowls for a week(we'll be doing just breakfast), or just a get you started kind of supply. I bet I can ask housekeeping for more.

2.) Are there any coffee mugs. From what I remember there were some, but how many?

3.) Are there any glasses. From what I remember there were some, but how many?

4.) What is a trundle bed. Is it good for a 9 month old or is a crib more appropriate? Disney said that they will provide a crib.

5.) Are there any high chairs available for room use? I didn't even know how to answer this one to my cousin. I know Olivia's has.

I wish we had the points to get the 1-bedroom villa, but a studio will just have to do. I figure if we are really organized, we can make it work.

To answer some of your questions:

1)There probably won't be enough suppleies (bowls etc) to last a week, but I have always been able to get more from housekeeping. I think there may be a charge for some items.

2) We have always received 4 glasses and coffee mugs along with a few packages of coffee for the coffee maker at both OKW and Vero.

3) No idea on the trundle bed

4)I believe high chairs are available on request.

Have a nice trip. I think you will be able to make it work. There is a patio with a small table and a couple chairs that will give yu a little more room.

The paper products are just a 1-night amount typically. For a stay of a week I'd bring my own, or prepare to rinse off your paper plates <g>. There are no trundle beds - you'll have 2 queen beds and the porta-crib for the baby. The porta-crib is in the closet - just bring it out and set it up. I know there are 4 glasses, but I remember only 2 mugs....I could be wrong, though.

The larger units have high chairs, so I'm sure the resort has a spare they can bring you. In a studio though, how many meals do you plan to eat....and will the high chair be so necessary you'd want it hanging around the room all week? I think I'd try to do without. As it is, you've only got a table and 2 chairs...unless you bringin the little chairs from the porch, but then your table will be too small. The studio is beautiful, but in my opinion it'll be a bit crowded for anything other than sleeping with 3 adults and a baby.

just to answer the question, a trundle bed is a bed that fold up into the wall...that way, it isn't out and in the way during the day...pull it down and go to sleep....
as stated above, okw does not have trundle beds....

Sorry, Sunking. What you are referring to is a "Murphy Bed" and no DVC has those. A trundle bed is a smaller bed that rolls under the large bed in the room. Some of the hotels have those, but not OKW. The 2 queen beds and the pac-n-play crib will be all you will find.

You should request a large crib. They still have some around and the baby will be much more peaceful in it. You can just ask for a high chair when you check in. Our 20 month old really seem to enjoy the larger bed during our 9 night stay in October. He slept much better and longer than he did in the pack and play at HH in May.

From my one stay in an OKW studio:

1)Ask for a nonhandicapped room unless you need one.

2)You get only a few paper bowls and plates, only starter amounts of shampoo, soap, and coffee too. Pack your own and use that space in your suitcase for souvenirs on the way back! I think they will give you more glasses or mugs if there are less than 4.

3)You won't want to spend much time hanging around the room. It is good for sleeping and breakfast.

4)Request top floor if you want any kind of view. Ground floor studios apparently are mostly view-less.

I just wanted to mention that there are only 19 handicapped accessible studios in all of OKW (I emailed GS to ask once), so your chances of getting one without asking for it is not that big.

The high chairs are the kind you get in a restaurant. A 9 month old should do okay. I requested a high chair for my 5 month old GDD, she is not sitting independently and this type of chair is for an older child. I was told this was the only kind they had. It does fit in the closet so you can put it away when not in use.

They had 4 glasses and 4 coffee mugs, a 10 cup coffee maker, a toaster, some dishwashing soap, sponge and some paper plates.
Housekeeping is great about replacing them, they also had plastic eating utensils, also easily replaced.
OKW does not have trundle or murphy beds. They have, as mentioned, two queens and one porta crib.
Not sure they would bring you a full size crib in a studio, there is no room for one.
Not sure where you would stash the highchair, I doubt the closet would hold it if you are using it for clothes, perhaps in a corner by the table.

That is a little misleading. If they randomly assigned them and no one cared what they got, you'd be correct but that's not the case. Some people need the handicapped room and ask for them. Others ask not to have them (including myself). Many ask for a first floor or elevator and still ask not to have them. We've been assigned one about half the time on DVC trips when we were in a studio, at least on first room offered. I always double check and then they give me another room. My signature for DVC communications and reservations has 2 requests listed on it, no smoking and no handicapped room. I think they hold the ones out and give them to people that either come in late or they think won't fuss about them. The point being that there are more factors than just the simple math associated with the percentages and if you ask for a first floor or elevator, your chances are MUCH higher. And don't bother using the arguement "you don't want to take it from someone who really needs it" they have more than they need at present. As we all age, this will change somewhat.

We did not specify a non-handicapped room and received one.
I had to specify second floor for my daughter to avoid getting a handicapped room. It will matter in terms of getting a tub vs an open shower that will get the floor wet all the time. There is less cabinet space under the counters as others have pointed out.

I posted the information about the number of handicapped accessible studios because it has been posted in the past that more than half of the first floor studios are handicapped accessible. I knew they were not and had emailed GS at one point to find out just how many there are.
If someone really does not want a handicapped accessible room, they can always make NOT having one assigned a preferences as you do.

If there is a full-size crib available they work just fine in a studio. you just put in the area where the lock-off door is. It really doesn't take that much additional space. Full-size cribs have been used for years in the moderates, etc They work great. The area underneath the crib is real handy for putting shoes or the kids toys. Again get one if you can...the child in your group will be a much happy camper and so will the rest of your party. The high chair can be set over by the bed against the wall near the patio/balcony. No problem. Folks with small children have all the answers when it comes to econimizing a space when "baby/kid stuff" is involved.
