Please don't flame me-that's a DVC salesperson's word, not mine. Last week, in MK, I approached the DVC sales booth [looking for pins]. The sales lady and I got talking, and as I listen to some of this "discussion" of the OKW pool slide, and as I remember the man who accosted me and DH last year, ranting about the GD pool slide (DH and I just stopped into Gurgling Suitcase for a quiet drink-little did we suspect...). We were listing the different WDW DVC resorts last week, and I commented how DH likes OKW best. "Oh, yes," she said, smiling and shaking her head, "Those Old Key West people. Sometimes they get a llittle-"she hesitated, searching for the right word, "-fanatical." I thought that was an interesting choice of words. DH and I have been laughing about that since-with fond memories of Richyams, I think he'd agree. And DH is right there as "fanatical" as can be! Hope everyone else has the sense of humor about this and gets a laugh too.

Fanatical? Ok, well, maybe just a little. :)

I, too, have fond memories of our discussions with Rich on that subject, and he would have happily agreed with the DVC person! :D I added on there, myself, and count myself as a lucky person to be in such a...hmmm...enthusiastic bunch! :grouphug:

Hmmmmm..... Disney folks tend to be more fanatical than your average person, DISers even more so, DVC DISers more than that - so when you talk about WDW->DIS->DVC->OKW: now those are some SERIOUS fanatics! ;)

LOL - that's funny. Are we really fanatical!

I don't think it's being fanatical I just think it's  :D

OKW seems to be a "love it or hate it" kind of place. For some it's a snoozy condo-like resort that doesn't seem "Disney" enough, and for others (like me), it is a beautiful, lush oasis of calm in the crazy World, the best place to come home to after a long Disney day. If you "get" Old Key West, you want to defend it to the non-believers. Perhaps this is the nature of the fanaticism.

We definitely get OKW,and love it............Can't wait to get home again for our 2nd visit!OKW rocks! :cloud9:

I wouldn't say it's love it or hate it. I'm a BWV person myself. During my stay at OKW, I found the accomadations really nice. However, I would really like it if they could make it so I didn't have to walk across the parking lot and cross the street to get to the pool. Then, I *hated* (yes, hated) being "stranded" waiting for the (insert favorite expletive here) bus! There are times at BWV when I don't want to take the bus and so I'll take a boat or walk through Epcot to the monorail, or some other form. At OKW, it was boat or stranded. Of course, I could drive my vehicle, but then I had to park across the (insert that favorite expletive here also) parking lot because someone *always* took the parking spaces close to the unit. So, I found myself complaining a lot. I want activity. I used to get excited watching out the window when I would see the gardener drive by in his little cart. "Look!! There's life out there!!"

Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy OKW (thus, I didn't hate it), just not nearly as much as I enjoy BWV. Of course, if everyone enjoyed the exact same thing, we wouldn't need different resorts, different theme parks (located in different parts of the country), etc.

I bought into OKW in 1994 and have added on at BCV and SSR as my kid's interests have changed. Its been neat to watch what appeals to them as they have become young (at times) adults. Weather and the time of year sometimes decide where we want to stay, yet in the last few trips, if there is any stress in the family (more than usual) OKW seems to be the pick. The atmosphere really is therapeutic and they are the ones to point it out. Isn't that one of the great things about DVC, the choices?

LOL, fanatical is one way of describing it! Whenever we went to WDW, Rich made it a point to visit each DVC booth and act like he was truly interested in whatever they were selling. He'd look at the floorplans and ask questions like "wow, isn't this a lot smaller than OKW's kitchen?" etc.

Who knows, he may have left a lasting impression on at least some of the salespeople ;)

We'll be staying at SSR next weekend with his family but will definitely be spending time at OKW to spread his ashes....it really was his favorite place in the world.

Lisa, your post made me smile. I hope you and your daughter have a wonderful trip, and I will be thinking of you. I am sure you know how many here miss your husband and it is nice to see you on the Boards.

We just got home from a stay at SSR. While there, we visited our home at VWL. We enjoyed moseying around the place, taking a nap by the villas fireplace, playing checkers with the kids.

The point is, we love VWL, its our home! We enjoyed our stay at SSR, but would have preferred being home. We have stayed at OKW once and enjoyed our stay there also. In fact, we would like to stay at OKW again. And in time we will want to stay at SSR again. But in both stays, we missed not being home at VWL.

I think its OK to be passionate about your home resort. OKWers have reason to be. Its a beautiful resort. If it hadnt been a DVC resort, we may never have had a BWV, VWL, HH, VB, BCV or a SSR.

So hats off to you OKWers, especially the original early purchasers who had the foresight to see the benefits of DVC. Thanks for taking the chance. It has brought many, many more of us so much pleasure.

DVC should be very thankful for all those "fanatical" OKW owners. Without them and their passion for OKW/DVC I doubt the entire program would have grown to where it is today.

Interesting post! Fanatical? I prefer to call it "Hopelessly Devoted to OKW"! Love it!!!!!

I also love OKW - but I also love VWL....

I don't love BWV - it is too busy for me. But I kept my points there because I want the standard views on those few trips my nephew will go with me.

I really liked BCV - didn't stay long enough to love it.

I will be in SSR in May. I will tell you then if I love it or not.

I bought points at VWL in 2001 and another contract at SSR last year. Have made about 8 DVC trips since buying and have never stayed anywhere but OKW. I absolutely love it. I can understand if OKW owners are "Fanatical". Your resort is one of the best. :teleport:

Of course, we all know that *any* of the DVC resorts are "one of the best". ;) :)
