Hi. Im going to be @ OKW from Dec 24 to Jan 3, I need to bring my laptop & check my email, go online etc. Is there internet access DSL? in the rooms? thanks Val S.

There is high speed in the room for $9.99 per 24 hour period. Or you can do dial-up for 35 cents per local call (member rate, otherwise 75 cents). I take my laptop with me, I found dial-up adequate for what I do (no long downloads).

Hi Debbie, thanks for the info. re the dial up, that is what is use @ home, but im in Canada-how would I use the dial up? any idea? should i pu one of those so many free minutes for AOL cd? thanks Val S.

There are several options for local dialup service at WDW. You can use a "free" trial of AOL, but you'll spend lots of time "cleaning" your computer afterwards of all the pop-up junk you loaded with the "free" installation.

You can get a free service - like netzero or juno (I'd download it on the computer from home and you'll be all set once on site). There are also prepaid services that offer local service at WDW. (Budget dialup is a good one).

You could also just call an Orlando local ISP and pay for a month's service (shoudl be no more than $20) to use during your stay.

I use netzero at WDW and it works fine. Just make sure the dialup number is truly a local call. There is a list of local prefixes in the villa phone directory and you can also check with the resort operator. (You DO NOT want to use a long distance number with all of the surcharges at the resorts.) Use a number for Reedy Creek and you should be fine.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the info Doc, you woulldnt happen to have a one of the local Reedy Creek #s for netzero would you? thanks

I already have AOL for broadband (DSL) so I switched to the dialup plan for this month and then switched it back after my return ($14.99 broadband vs $23.99 diaup). AOL 9.0 has a popup blocker, so I don't have that problem.

Netzero sounds like a good idea.

Doc,

I also use netzero account just for travel... but I travel so much that I use their $10/month plan. I am moderately satified with it... but not fully. My biggest issue is that they block the ability to connect to SMTP mail servers. I can download my email (via POP), but I cannot transmit. However, it does work OK if I use a web based mail interface like mail2web. The best thing that I like with netzero is they seem to have more access numbers than most of the other services... and you do not have to make a phone call every time you want to change locations... the phone number database seems to be built into their dialer.

More recently I've been using PDAnet which allows me to use my cellphone as a modem (my Sprint cellphone plan includes unlimited internet access). The advantage of this is that it is free, and the bandwith is higher than with dialup... The disadvantage is that it only works where I have digital cell phone service... which is great at WDW... but non-existent in other places that I travel (like the coast). Also, when I am connected to the internet... I can no longer send or receive cell calls... but that does not seem to bother me in most cases... unless I am expecting an urgent phone call.

When I do go some place that does have high speed internet access... I usually cough up the ~$10/day for broadband.

/Jim
