Our company provides chaplins that come around weekly to check on employees, see if they need anything, talk, prayer, etc. We maybe see two of them a week as they make rounds on various shifts in various departments, 3 at the most. Well today at 1:45 PM there have already been 3 that have stopped by. :confused3 While I do appreciate that the company does this they sometimes can be intrusive and clearly see that you are working busily but want to carry on a 30 minute conversation with you. The last one stopped on the way in and then again upon leaving just to make sure I'm okay spiritually.

Maybe it was my Toby Mac music blaring from my radio.:rotfl: :rolleyes1

What kind of company do you work for? Maybe someone is spreading rumors about you;)

:thumbsup2

Well you would expect that many if not more at a hospital or something of the same nature. We, however, are definately not a hospital. We are a meat processing plant.

Well one of the chaplins that came today I had never met before and when I told him who I was, he said, "oh everyone speaks so highly of you". So if they are spreading rumors.......at least it must be good rumors.

Well that was unexpected. :lmao:

At least they've been hearing good things about you.

Now I'm especially curious. Are there chaplains there because working at a meat processing plant can be somewhat disturbing? Or is it unrelated to the industry and your employer just sees the benefits of taking extra care of the mental/spiritual well-being of the employees?

I'd say it is the later part of your post as the founder of our company is very outspoken about his faith and you happen to be in the state where the business started.

I would find that bothersome.. If there is one thing I can't stand, it's the feeling that someone is trying to force religion on me - regardless of the reasoning behind it..

I have my own religious beliefs and a church that I attend where there is always someone available to "talk" to - if need be..

Just my opinion, but that would drive me nuts!! It's right up there with religious groups that canvas neighborhoods knocking on my door.. I consider it an invasion of my privacy..

I guess I'm just too nice and feel like I'd be rude to not talk to them when they come in and speak to me.

Well I wouldn't be "rude" to them - but I would be gritting my teeth the entire time..;)

:thumbsup2 There are a couple who are especially long winded and when I hear them coming I breath a sigh of oh-no, and start praying that my phone will ring, again, and again.

Are these chaplains on company payroll? That just seems weird, unless as a previous poster said, you were working at a hospital or hospice, where there would normally be chaplains. What if you were a completely different faith, or not religious at all? What would the reaction be if someone simply told the chaplain they felt religious beleifs weren't a subject for discussion at work, and that they held their beliefs privately?

Chuck -- If it's like the manufacturing company I'm familiar with that has a chaplain, they probably don't hire anyone who isn't Christian. In that case, the chaplain has other duties than religious. Employees probably also are told about the chaplains and the owner's faith and how it's translated at the company when you are hired.

I worked for a hospice for five years, and our chaplains did not generally work with employees. We had some group grief counseling after 911 -- that's the only time I had chaplain services in five years. If an employee had wanted chaplain services, however, I guess it could have been arranged. Patients could decline chaplain services, too.

Same here. That would really annoy me and make me very uncomfortable. Was that disclosed to you when you were offered the job? I find it very rude that someone would assume I need spiritual help.

:scared1: Is this a UNITED STATES OF AMERICA company??

As far as the original post, I'm with C. Ann...I'd find the whole thing intrusive and annoying.

It wouldn't bother me at all unless they were pushy. And most chaplains I've ever met are not pushy. I think it seems like a nice and probably generous gesture on the employer's part, as long as the rule is that if someone says they aren't interested in chatting (about anything - serious matters or just chit-chat), they get the signal and leave the person alone.

The program has probably been helpful to a lot of people who don't have anyone to go talk to. I can find something to talk to most people in this world about. Maybe one of them is a Disney fan .

I would, too.

I delivered at a Catholic hospital and wasn't looking forward to the visit I knew was coming... luckily, when she showed up I was on the phone and she said she'd come back. Never did! I was so excited... I am such a dork. :rotfl:

I'm not sure the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.

10 minutes per day wasted equals one full week at the end of one year.

Mikeeee

I think it can be rude, especially if the person is not spiritual. What if they are atheists. Do they still have to deal with the chaplains?

And even if you aren't atheist, why would they think that you need spiritual counseling? It's a place of work, not worship.

Is there something that you can do to let them know that you are fine, but are very busy with work. Maybe explain that you speak to your pastor on a regular basis.

I guess I just don't understand why they would want you to spend time on this when you should be working. I totally understand the importance of spirituality, but that is something personal that should be attended to outside of work.

I've never heard of anything like this. I would be beyond ticked off to have a chaplain annoying me at work. Can you opt out of these little visits?
