To all:

We have a friend with a 10yo DD in 3rd grade. The child has an IEP and is a very hard worker. However her grades are D's. She has greatly improved in the last 2 years. So while her grades reflect her ability against the "standard" it does not reflect the huge improvement this child has made over the last 2 years.

So mom is wondering if anyone has ideas to suggest to the school for an "unofficial" report card to give to the DD. Does anyone have any experience with this?

I would use the IEP goal updates that should come out each quarter. Then she can see how she is doing on the things she needed to work on and see improvement there instead of a letter grade that is based upon the rest of the class.

We use the IEP progress report and a narrative to accompany the report card.

Doesn't she have an accommodation that requires her grades to be modified?????

If she has an IEP then she should not be graded like the rest anyway. Her grades should reflect her progress anyway and adjusted as such. Ask to have the school special ed director or the district director of pupil services at the next meeting. They should ask that a standard grading policy should be set up for this child and it could be used for others with disabilities also. When you offer sugestions that can be used for more then one they are more likely to want to comply. Remember that all children are entitled to a free and adequate education. Those with an IEP or 504 are entitled to a free and appropriate education. Some states may use slightly different wording but it is saying the same thing. They do not have to give you what is best just appropriate. Remember wording can make all the difference.
