Anybody want to take a guess why it's no longer free?
(jeopardy tune plays).

ding ding ding

You're absolutely correct - guest demand!!!!

apparently people used to go and just drink their 3 beers and leave, leaving the seminar speaker with no one to speak to.

So, due to "guest demand" we now pay for the seminar. Today's speaker didn't show up, stuck in traffic or something. The WDW fill-in guy was great, he actually answered the question, why isn't it free any more! and no more bottle openers either.

But the beer is still darn good!:thumbsup2

We did the Kendal Jackson wine tasting today. It was three wines (two white and a red) and while they were good, I really wasn't that impressed. The cost was reasonable at $12/pp. Rather small portions but it is a tasting, not a guzzling.

All of the deminars used to be free up until a couple years ago. I think part of the reason is similar to what you said. Many people would be rude and just leave early and get in line for the next one. But I think part of it was some sort of law change with taxes or something.

Disney charging for these cut down on that practice and made money from it, which worked great for them.

I never saw this happen. I never saw anyone get out the tasting and go get in line for another one before it was over. There was usually a long line there already and those people in most cases waited for the next one. You waited and waited and waited. There was no way you could go to a tasting and then jump to another one. Maybe you saw this happen?

"Guest Demand" means we decided we can charge money for this and get away with it.

Glad you enjoyed the tasting. Sam Adams makes very good beer.

Smee: I've just had an apostrophe.
Captain Hook: I think you mean an epiphany.
Smee: Lightning has just struck my brain.
Captain Hook: Well, that must hurt.

I just realized - all this time Disney has been telling us changes, cutbacks, upcharges, etc. were due to "guest demand". And all this time we weren't understanding what they were telling us...no, there isn't a large throng of crazy guests saying, "Charge us more! Take it away and charge us more!"

"Guest demand" in the sense of "supply and demand". The guest demand for the existing service is so high, they (choose one: can't afford to keep doing it as is/realize they can charge for it and cover costs and mitigate over-demand)...

Or it's the whiskey talking. Not sure.

We did way better at the culinary demonstration yesterday. Chef Sergio Endara formerly of Akershus, now at the Land, made Pan Seared Salmon and Pumpkin Risotto (using Farro, not rice) with a Spicy Fig & Pomegranate Chutney. Very tasty and a recipe we'll try at home. The chef is very engaging (using no-cut gloves no less) and his mother was in the audience. It was worth it. :thumbsup2

We did the Chateau Saint Michelle seminar today. Very good choices:
Started with a Chateau Saint Michelle & dr. Loosen "Eroica" Riesling that is one of our favorites.
Second was Chateau Saint Michelle "Canoe Ridge Estates" Chardonnay. Very nice, not quite as fruity as you might expect.
last was the Chateau Saint Michelle "Cold Creek Vineyards" Cabernet Sauvignon. Also very good with a earthy, buttery flavor and a nice smooth finish.

Selling at the F&W fest at $26, $30 and $35 respectively. Expect to find them for much less at your local store.

This is exactly it. When demand is very high, price goes up. Simple economics.

When the wine tastings were in the Innoventions area, I saw it happen. There was a faction of people that I noticed, and my friends who live in Florida recognized them as festival hogs. They would drink, leave and get back into line. Because tastings were free.

Don't get me wrong. I was happy to participate when they were free, but I had the courtesy to stay through the presentation and not leave just to ensure I'd get into the next presentation. Because the queue for the next presentation could be full while the current one is going on, the people would leave to secure spots.

The tastings moved to the former Wonders of Life pavilion as the Festival Center when Disney started charging. The freeloaders lost their gravy train.
