OK, this is *slightly* odd...

At my shop we have a most, uh, unusual customer. He never buys anything, but he's a regular visitor. What's interesting about him is his dress sense or lack of dress sense. Today he marched in wearing an Indian Head Dress; last time it was a cowboy costume. Best of all was a Matrix getup... lined with pink and purple fur.

I honestly don't know what to make of him

I doubt he "marched" in, but if I routinely saw someone like that I'd probably figure that they were in a play or had a job with children or something where they get dressed up.

Why don't you just ask him why he's in costume instead of making stuff up about him?

What kind of shop? If your shop is a coffee cafe in a bohemian neighborhood maybe the guy is just a charming eccentric. On the other hand, if you work in a ladies lingerie shop I'd size up the guy as more threatening. Also,are you in a big city or a rural town? IN NYC I would think nothing of it but where I am now in the suburbs i'd think he was disturbed because the environment doesn't fit the behavior, KWIM

Trust me, I'm making nothing up. As for asking him about his choice of attire, I'd judge that to be quite rude. It's his legitimate choice and all I'm doing is reporting that I find it quite unusual.

Genteel sort of means posh or upper class - we avoid the violent and destructive types, for example, that other stores encounter elsewhere in Brighton.

We have a guy in my town that is kind of eccentric. Most people know who he is. He's liable to come into a bar/club/bar&grill and walk the perimeter of the place and then just walk out. He dresses oddly, mostly very 80's. Wears shorts at crazy times of the year. He almost always has on sunglasses and headphones. He's well off though, no money problems. The bad thing is that he's kind of a local celebrity and some of the teens treat him badly and destruct his home.

If we were all alike, it would give us nothing to talk about!
