OK , tell me I'm not the only one getting these phone calls please....

Every day I get 2-3 calls and when I pick up the phone nobody is there. sometimes I hang up after I say hello twice and nobody asnwers, other times I wait to see what happens and then it gets disconnected.
I have called the phone company and they advise me to get call manager but I can't get that without caller ID , which means just for that I have to pay $15 more on my phone bill a month and I refuse.
Maybe I should turn on the fax machine instead of the answering machine and beep the heck out of their whoever is doing this!!
BTW my number IS on the do not call list, I don't know why I'm still getting this phone calls.

Do you have caller-ID?? Mine is invaluable. Most likely the calls are coming from computer dialed telemarketers. They drive me nuts. If is says 'out of area' on the caller-ID, then it's most likely them. Here in Ma we can get on a 'don't call' list, starting in April. We're already signed up. I know that everyone has to make a living, and I do try to be nice, but....to stop what you're doing to hear nothing is frustrating. When I get one of these calls, I say hello once, hello again and then hang-up! Rest assured....they'll probably call back again.

I know it's telemarketers related because they only happen during the day but as late as 8 pm sometimes, no I don't have caller ID , I know people who have it and say it's useless in this area.

I know it's telemarketers too.

I have caller id.....but my DD's number also comes up as "out of area"....so I usually answer, unless I know she is in class.

I have a service where if I punch in *77 on my phone and the incoming number is "unavailable" "not known" or "private" they get a message that says we do not receive calls from these types of numbers (blocked) and to please hang up, unblock the number and call again.


It's part of my complete choice plan on Bell South--not sure if it works with other plans.

I get tons of them....aggravates the you know what out of me....I hang up too after a few hellos if they don't answer. Then if they call back I do ask them if they just tried calling me and then I tell them that if they didn't want to be on the phone when I answered - I don't want to be on the phone when they want to hear someone and I hang up!

It's telemarketers. A computer dials the numbers and if someone answers, it passes the call off to the sales person. If no sales person is availible, you get the "dead air".

i hate telemarketers. especially when they don't even have the courtesy to answer when you say hello. i am one of the people that hangs up anytime they call and don't answer within 5 seconds. i sorry if that is rude but it's rude on their part to call at inconvient times.

The worst thing is when they call, there is silence and then a recording will say, "Please hold the line, you have an important call". OH PLEASE...if it's so important, you can call me directly. I don't stay on hold when someone calls me!

I have a telezapper but you have to answer the phone for it to work and it only works on computer generated calls. It has cut down on the number of these types of calls I receive though.

Caller ID is the best $7.00 per month I've ever spent.

If it says "unavailable" or "unknown caller" I don't answer it. Simple as that. My answering machine is on....if it's something important, or it's a long lost relative who's number doesn't register, they'll leave a message.

I have a telezapper and it's really cut down on the number of sales calls I get. I don't have caller ID, but over time I've just let my answering machine pick up calls. My friends and family all know we screen calls so we pick up if it's them. Or if I'm in a particularly chippy mood, I'll answer the phone and give the telemarketers a hard time.

You ought to get the CD called "Revenge on the Telemarketers." It's from a guy who gives telemarketers a hard time. It's funny!

I've been getting them 1-2 times a day. They come up as "unavailable" on the caller ID. I don't answer it and they hang up as soon as the answering machine answers it. Very annoying, especially when I am in the basement or in a closet doing something and run to grab the phone, just to get "dead air" on the other end. There must be some sort of revenge!

Ok, so it's not just me....., I don't want to get caller ID because a lot of the local areas here show as unavailable and when they call me from the school I would not know, besides that I refuse to pay more money just to stop these people from calling!
Watch this , I'm going to start answering the phone in Catalan ( my native language ) that should get them off my back quick! LOL

I've never asked for a service like that. But I once got an e-mail from a friend in NJ who said that she was given a similar message when she tried to call me. Where's that flame guy?!

Catalan is a language spoken on the North East region of Spain, quite similar to French . There are several other languages spoken within different regions in Spain, confusing huh? Do you think I got a chance here for telemarketers to leave me alone?? LOL
